My windows media player with my win xp won't play DVD's, says i'm missing a DVD codec but isn't it standard for Media player to play DVDs? andI mean real legal DVD's to get that out of the way lol, I do have Win 7 RC which is only a trial and it plays DVD's just fine but XP is my main OS and my only DVD player is on my computer. Just wanna see what my options are. Also I have Media player 11.

DVD playback is only supported out of the box on Windows 7. You'll need to add a video codec to play DVDs on XP. Microsoft's list of the best DVD codecs.

Do all of those up convert to HD while playing through my HDtv? or only certain ones?

They all upscale, if you're going to get 1 you may want to take some time reading reviews online to see how well they work with your video card.

Don't worry about all that crap. Just get VLC at www.videolan.org. It has everything you need (in most cases).

You're mistaken. You alwaysrequired a codec installed to play DVD's with WMP (or any other player for that matter).
