premium is more than enough for gaming and multimadia use that isnt like extreme stuff. however ultimate edition will help you out noticably in the multimedia department. in the end though id still say save the money.

Home Premium has everything the average gamer needs and then some. So go with that. You'll do fine.

Most programs - if not all - work perfectly fine in Windows 7 if they work in Windows Vista. When I was still running an early BETA of Windows 7 I never experienced issues regarding programs, I used the same programs that I used on my Windows Vista computer.

I must say that Windows 7 feels a lot snappier, programs open faster and it barely loads randomly.

Ultimate would not help in multimedia department. That's just false. Ultimate just has a few more features that most of us will never use.

Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate is nothing more than a pre-configured Virtual PC application. It is not for gaming. I'm not sure why you would think Ultimate would have more multimedia functionality, both Professional and Ultimate are actually more usde to business than anything else. They include domain support, etc.

Yeah, Virtual PC is used to run Virtual Machines in for Virtual Environments. And I highly doubt you want to play your games in a Virtual Machine, since it will lower your performance by over a 10000%.. :P I tried Tetris in a Windows 98 Virtual Machine, it lagged already while it had 0 effects or whatsoever.

use Virtual Box instead. It has 2d and 3d acceleration support built in. You won't have that same issue.

home prem is fine, just it limits ram to 16gb if you care and has no automatic backup options. apart from that you wont notice any difference. home prem has all the multimedia option of ultimate just it lacks some of the networking and backup which your average home user will never touch. I'd go for pro as it's not much more and has just about everything ultimate has.

What exactly does this 'Automatic Backup' do? Make a full back-up while running the O/S?
