So I'm creating my rig and I'm almost done, but I've done research on google about the new OS called windows 7 which is supposedly coming out in 2009-2010. I was going to purchase vista ultimate 64 bit, but Windows 7 coming out I'm still wondering if I should just purchase windows xp and purchase Windows 7 when its released. What do you guys think?

My Rig Specs:

ASUS Striker 2 Extreme

Corsair 4 gig DDR3 ram

seagate perpendicular 7200 320 gig HDD

Quad 9450

8800GTX Ultras

Well actually probably just a year and a couple months. Lots of articles are saying that Windows 7 is being pushed to late 2009.

The chance of you seeing Windows 7 on the shelf by 2010 even is fairly slim.

wow, awesome rig you got there. "8800GTX Ultras" with the "S" i guess you're gonna Tri-Sli it huh?...ok i see...since you have the money to buy all these expensive components why don't you get:

500GB hdd instead of 320GB

and it seems you forgot about the power supply?...get:

Corsair HX1000W that PSU is more than enough to power the most power hungry PC..

Anyways your question: Should you wait for Windows 7 or get Vista 64-Bits? I would take Vista because by the time Windows 7 comes out your rig won't be as powerful as now...remember GTX280 and Bloomfield and X58 power components are coming out in 2009?...so yeah

Hope this helps

To buy XP now is not really the wisest of moves.

Windows 7 is at best speculations right now. I believe a release probably by 2010, maybe even early 2011.
It is all really dependiong on how well Vista does. If Vista sells strong (as it is right now) I see no reason for MS to bring up a new OS and face the bad press about all the bugs in just a year and a halfs time.
MS wont throw out a new OS just for the sake of it, seeing as they have (almost) a monopoly.

Go for Vista home premium, all the usefull features of ultimate at half the price.

Get Vista Home Premium 64-bit. It should save you something near $50-100 and still be just as usable. Windows 7 isn't coming out for a long, long time. With probable delays factored in, I wouldn't expect it before 2011.

This, unless you really need Windows Buisness combined with Home Premium, Windows Ultimate is a friggin waste.

I plan on building my own pc down the road and I plan to use xp still. Util vista just dominates all of the pcs out there or if ms decides to stop supporting xp all to gether.

As someone stated...go with Vista...XP is NOT going to stick around for long...Microsoft is NOT going back to it...they have spent a lot of time and money on Vista and will not kill it too soon. Also...they might be saying Windows 7 is coming out in a year or two but if you look at past time frames for operating system releases...it gets pushed to a later date over and over and over. Just go with Vista. More and more games are coming native for Vista (Conan etc.).

Someone else also mentioned SLI....I've only had experience with one SLI....the 7800 GTX SLI for my Dell XPS....hated it and replaced them a few years later. I found that a lot of games would not support both cards and often I would find one card doing most the work. Also...some games recommend disabling SLI for their game cause it would cause hitching and various issues. This seemed so much work just to play. I say its better to have one really good card then two....also the heat is easier to control with one good card .. two cards in SLI are very close together so the heat is more severe.

Just my opinion....

wait for another vista service pack than u waiting for windows 7, i read that windows 7 pack very small, and to make windows compatible with any hardware or software, microsoft need support from hardware and software vendor. vista 64 bit it's good enough, and dont choose vista xp 1, still many bug and problems on there.
