Hello I just bought the below computer:

33642 Intel Core I7 920 2.66Ghz Box Socket 1366
34321 Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Socket 1366
35380 Scythe Mugen 2 CPU Cooler
34879 Mushkin Essential DDR3 PC3-16000 6GB 3x2GB 9-10-9-24
34010 Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA2 MAESTRO
34154 Cooler Master HAF 932
35218 Corsair HX850 850W Modular
36038 Asus Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5
35827 LG GH22NS50 Grabadora DVD SATA 22X Negra OEM
34641 Logitech Cordless Desktop Wave Pro OEM
36200 Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64bits OEM

I have two questions before it arrives tomorrow.... what partion of the hard drive do you recommend? I will just use the computer for gaming (Dragon age...here we go!) and internet...

Also, with my current rig (Windows XP) I have several other programs I have to take care of the computer like: CCLeaner, O&O Defrag, Glary utilities, Ad Awareand Regystry mechanic.... will those programs still be necesary in a Windows 7 set up?

Any other tips before I install windows 7? Any good web with good tips for good Windows 7 performance?

Thanks

Well Ccleaner is always a good thing to have on your computer, and any other utilities that can be useful. Be careful on the registry cleaners though, using a 32bit Reg cleaner on a 64bit OS is a sure fire way to kill your OS and require it to be installed again. really it's all about preferance though for utilities. I don't mind just using the wondows disk manager and defrag and opt out on 3rd party software.

As far as performance whise go your rig is strong so performance won't be a big issue. You can speed up boot times by going into msconfig and using all your cpu cores at startup instead of the defaulted 1.

As far as hard drive partitioning I really prefer to just use one hard drive for the operating system and a 2nd one as the storage space. If you aren't going to use your old PC you can canabalize your old parts, if nothing else the HDD and Optical drives are always keepers.

Ok, understood...how much should I keep for operating? 50 gigs? 100 Gigs? Also, would you change anything of my rig?

I wouldn't bother, at least give W7 a try without them for a few months. As for security/virus software be sure to check out Microsoft's excellent and FREE Microsoft Security Essentials.

The choice of virus/security software is up to you, but given the great reviews and my own person experience I'll be moving all of my machines to Security Essentials sooner rather than later. IMHO there is no reason to use anything else.

Windows 7 includes a lot of stuff out of the box including DVD Playback/video codecs, but if you find some media you can't play you can add the Windows 7 Codec Pack and 64 bit Components if required. While DVD playback worked out of the box Blu-ray didn't, so I added PowerDVD 9 for Blu-ray playback. Another great tool is 7-zip to uncompress the files the in-built extraction tool can't. If you use this just make sure you run it as administrator when you make changes in the options. I don't kjnow if this is a UAC issue, or just a problem with the current release. A few apps from Vista have been removed from Windows 7 but these have been replaced by freely downloadable Windows Live Essentials. Be sure to check these out to see if there are any you want/need. Other than those few apps I just installed my normal stuff, Office 2007, Steam, Quicktime/iTunes, etc. All in all my experience with Windows 7 has been great, all of my hardware was picked up out of the box, and upgraded with my first Windows Update. The only drivers I took the time to install by hand (even though Windows Update had them too) were Nvidia's latest drivers + their SLI patch. Good luck with it all, you look like you have 1 hell of a machine for Windows 7. :)

Well in both Vista nad 7 it didn't use all the cores by default. I had to manually set that up.

see how this article has an "update" added to it. a lot of people thought changing that setting helps....but it doesn't really http://lifehacker.com/396904/make-vista-use-multiple-cores-to-speed-boot-time

Interesting. I haven't had any problems doing this however, and I've knocked about 10 seconds off my boot time. Now it could be a result of the updates fixing issues, but I'll have to look more into this. Thanks for the info though.

EDIT: Sure enough undoing the changes in msconfig didn't change my boot times. I did another install of windows 7 (have a few keys) and tried timing the boot times before updates and after updates, and that is what gave me the change in speed.
