Hi there,

Yesterday, my laptop came up with this message in a blue screen.

I've tried doing system restores, start-up repairs, and repairing using the installation dvd, but nothing seems to work.

I've looked online, and all I'm getting is XP solutions.

The system restores i've tried are a variety from this month, all from critical updates.

The start up repairs just fail, and just want to send information away, and trying to do a restore system image fails because it can't seem to find them on my external HDD.

When I used the Installation DVD, and chose to repair, it wanted to me to do it it from a logged on laptop..useful.

I haven't installed any programs recently. and the laptop ran fine about 12 hours prior to this happening.

Anyone have any tips, or will I have to resort to fully reinstalling it again, and grab my files from the windows.old folder?

Thanks for reading.

Dan.

I wouldn't count on the "windows.old" folder. I'm not sure if it's true, but I've heard that Windows 7 will reformat your drive regardless and the folder will not be there. Maybe someone else knows a bit more about it..

A quick Google of "Bad System Config" returns a lot of result about the system RAM possibly being bad.

1) If your system has 2 RAM modules installed, try removing one and running the system on just one module at a time

2) Download and run MemTest86

3) If all else fails, copy all your critical files (docs, pictures, etc) to the external drive and do a complete system wipe.

Hmm, that would be really annoying if it just wiped it without some kind of old folder, though when I installed it from Vista, there was still a Windows.old folder.

I did notice the trend of RAM, I bought some new RAM sometime early June, I wanted to have 4 gigs with 64bit you see, I've still got the old sticks, so I might give them a go, see if I can get on to back-up then re-install.

Are your voltage, speed, and timing settings correct in the bios? Mainly the voltage, as the speed and timings are likely lower than advertised without changing them yourself.

I tried changing back to my old RAM, still didn't work, and in the setup, I noticed that my current RAMs speed is lower than it should be, so unless where I bought it from gave me the wrong sticks, I've got slower RAM then it should be.
