Ok, I have ordered a new build and it will be here soon. I want to use my windows 7 beta on it, but want to use the latest version. If I install the current version of windows 7, when the new one comes out in a few days will I have to completely reformat to get the new version or can I just update it? Thanks

why not just wait for the actual release of windows 7, betas arent meant for everyday use and usually arent guaranteed stable for everyday use either. youd have to reformat to get the real windows 7 anyway so why not just save yoursellf the time and agrivation of formatting and wait

You'll have to reformat if you want switch from the beta to next week's Release Candidate.

To that effect, you'll also have to reformat to move from the beta or release candidate to the retail version when it becomes available.

No you won't need to reformat your current version of windows 7 to update to the newer one. I've just recently updated from version 7077 to 7100RC. Pop the disk in and chose update OS.

Where did you hear until 2010? I just got an email from MS, literally this second, and it says available at least through June 30, 2009. While I have played with Windows 7 beta, and it is ok. I would not want to use a beta as my main OS. If it were me I would just go on and buy Vista, or even XP if that suits you more. It could easily take MS a year or more to actually release Windows 7.

**EDIT**

To zaku101: That may have worked, but I would not trust an "update" OS. And in that email I got from MS, it says "MPORTANT: If you are running Windows 7 Beta you'll need to back up your data (preferably on an external device) and then do a clean install of the Windows 7 Release Candidate. After installing Windows 7, you will need to reinstall applications and restore your files."

So while it MAY work, I would not try it, especially if it is your main OS.

OK, so despite MS warning against it, an upgrade might be doable. I know from working with Windows Server that they can detect the OS version and disable the option to upgrade. In the case of Beta 7077, they apparently allow the upgrade. In the case of the last public-released Beta (7000?), they may program the RC not to allow the upgrade.

Stable, how? While I still don't have Vista, I use it almost everyday, and neither me or anyone I know have had any real issues with it. Also, why 7 is not bad, it is also not problem free. I have read of a few, and one I had was where it would not see my main partition of my dual boot set-up, while XP saw them both. Also if I am not mistake they have not released SP 2 yet for Vista, other than Beta and RC.

Well where do you use vista? If at work then you will not be installing drivers and software will you?

Sometime at work, and other times at my friends place or brothers place. But the work PC, I built and service anyways, so yeah I did do ALL the driver and software installation. As I said, I have yet to have any real trouble.

Most people who have problems with Vista have crappy PC's, that or they have a problem and instead of figuring out what is the problem they just blame Vista.

If Vista is SO bad, why are there so many people saying they like it??

I wish i could use 7 beta but i had to erase the partition because the CAD program i use doesn't work, it freezes on installation which is strange since it supports vista.
