Ok so im currently running vista home premium 64 bit, and my windows 7 is coming.

So i bought my pc a 3 months ago and ive got alot of stuff on it. Now normally im a fond believer of clean installs, but i really dont want to go through all the trouble of re-installing everything.

If i do an upgrade to keep all my stuff, is this the same as doing a clean install? Is there any upsides to doing a clean install or any downsides to upgrading?

Thanks alot guys.

People recommend a clean install, but I did an upgrade instead because I'm lazy. I upgraded from Vista, runs great. Also, I didn't have to re-install any of my programs after the upgrade. Haven't seen a downside to upgrading yet.

Normally I would say to do a clean install, but considering that Windows 7 at its core is just Vista SP2 with a facelift and a few tweaks, I don't see why it would be a problem.

With the upgrade it may just run a little slower, and it may leave uneccessary files left over, just a tiny bit of lost space, and probably an extra second or 2 added to start-up time. Other than that, it should be fine.

i wouldn't do an custom install unless i absolutely had to people say upgrade installs will be messed up and cause problems, but i think that is TOTALLY overblown. most people will be fine.
