Hi guys,

Not a hardware question, but figured I'd get better input here than posting in the PC games thread.

Thinking about installing Windows 8, currently on Vista. Just wanted to get your feedback and experience from those who have upgraded their OS.

Do you like Windows 8, did you go back to your previous OS, any issues with your games in your steam library.

I'm leaning towards upgrading, figure it has to be better than Vista. Thanks.

If you are happy with your pc atm, I would stick with Vista. Games will not be magically better on win8 (maybe 1-2 fps) and the metro interface make simple tasking a chore. Personally, I got sick of it and went back to vista 64 on my gaming computer until modders figure a way to remove the metro interface and restore win7 desktop/start menu. Btw, I had no compatibility issue with any program, so don't worry with that aspect.

The only real difference is instead of a start menu you have a start screen. Sure, some of the metro apps aren't as intuitive with keyboard and mouse but you don't have to use them. Just populate the start screen with programs that open up on the desktop. Totally worth it for wickedly fast boot times and cloud integration. Also the "up a directory" button is back, explorer UI has gotten a lift, better security, it handles moving files more gracefully and a ton of other under the hood tweaks.

its great fun if ur a social media fanatic and want a more "alive" looking OS, otherwise its also great for people who arent used to normal windows. I sell it for work and love it on the touch screen desktops or tablets, it looks so pretty!!! for us here though on this forum, it might be aimed at the wrong crowd.

stupidest thing i hear is people saying "how much it is like mac now".........NO IDEA WHERE THEY SEE IT, seriously, Brightly coloured tiles that rotate themselves with up to date information or pictures......arranged in a tight grid where u can customise each ones size...looks nothing like ANYTHING apple.

dont foget ur normal windows look is still there underneath, just press the desktop button.

on a side note i have a nokia windows phone 8 coming soon to replace my HTC windows phone 7 HD7

I have Windows 8 Pro 64bit (System Build), and I really like it over Windows 7 64bit. I'm surprised how fast Windows 8 Pro 64 bit installed on a blank HD. It took about 10 minutes to install, and then of course it took longer to install all my programs. I would say Windows 8 Pro 64bit performs way better than Windows 7 64bit. Plus all the programs that I use in Windows 7 64bit work well in Windows 8 Pro 64bit.

I had been running the consumer Preview and dev preview. Finally just did an upgrade from win7. But gonna do a clean install soon, since the metro apps dont work. Would recommend if you like metro (which i kinda do). Normal desktop is one click away.

windows 8 is great, not perfect but a really good os that can still get alot better with some refinment to great ideas. also its technically much better than vista no question.

Yeah, there are a few apps like this. Samsung tablets actually ship with a Samsung app that gives you a Start Menu again. I made this video to highlight SSD performance on Win8 but I suppose it also shows off how fast you can get around the OS once you are familiar with it:

I upgraded from 7 to 8 and the Metro bits are a total non-issue (at least, so long as you're not using a multi-monitor set up, but even then it's worth fighting with the Charms menu for the sake of 8's better multi-monitor support). The tiles arrangement makes for a more useful start menu, win-key search still works, there are a bunch of improvements like the new task manager and file transfer window, and some under the hood stuff as well. There's a bit of a learning curve and a few niggling issues (the task switcher hot corner covers about half a Chome pinned tab), but 99% of the time it functions exactly like a better version of Windows 7.

Most importantly, though, the new Minesweeper has an Adventure mode. If that isn't worth dropping $40 on a Win 8 Pro upgrade, nothing is.

IDK man. I have been avoiding W8 fir a while now but I recently installed it on a dual boot, with W7 being my prmiary. While I don't see myself dropping W7 anytime soon, I have to admit...I am really liking some of the new features in W8. The biggest issue I am having is getting used to finding things and navigating around. Also, I did download and install a Start Menu replacement program, as the Start Menu is something I really don't wan't to do without. But when I am using W8 I actually tend to use the Metro look or 'App' screen alot. I am sure I will get tired of it, but it is a good idea for me to at least get familiar with it. As for being like Vista, I am going to disagree. W8 is much more stable and optimized tons more than Vista ever was or will be. Vista was just a sloppy mess and a memory wh0re. W8 is just different, some ways better, some worse. All in all, I am liking where MS is going with this whole 'App' thing. Some cool possibilities. I guess another gripe I have is that it is very obvious that this OS is really mean more for touchscreen systems.

Go for Windows 7 instead.

The UI in W8 is just terrible.

Are people really that dependent on the Start menu for navigating Windows? It's one of like half a dozen ways to launch apps and it's the only one that has changed in Windows 8. Shortcut keys, the Run line, desktop shortcuts, quickbar shortcuts, etc all work the same as in Windows 7. Even the Metro UI, while it looks different, fundamentally functions the same as the Start menu did. Hit the Windows key or click the lower left corner of the screen, start typing the name of an app and hit enter. This works in both Windows 7 and 8.

not sure if srs.

Windows 8 is 10x better than Vista.

Windows 8 is just not as polished as Windows 7, yet.
