I'm currently running windows XP and have been thinking about upgrading to windows 7. I know windows 8 will be released soon but I just don't care for it. There's nothing wrong with it from a technical standpoint, it's just designed for tablets and I own a desktop. I also don't care at all for whatever they're calling metro these days. My question is: will there will be any great deals on windows 7 when windows 8 is released? Should I just bite the bullet and upgrade to windows 8? I know upgrades will be like $40 till January, but like I said, I would really prefer windows 7. This will be part of a much larger upgrade (mobo, processor, and memory) Anyone heard anything about upcoming windows 7 prices? Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

I've found a few bugs in the UI. Upgrading went smooth on my desktop, I couldn't upgrade my np8130 laptop. "Upgrade failed." best error ever.
With windows8 they are literally hiding every error, and it's anoyying, that's my biggest complain. (For example when I BSOD'D from putting on 10 versions of intel rst, it just said something like "something is wrong with your computer ; ( "

my other major issue, is that you can't have a password longer than 16 characters. I mean what the fawk

but yeah, just go for windows 8 rather than 7, it works fine.

the new task manager is amazing though

Jiggly says it all, the UI is customizable, it's basically a Windows 7 desktop except each shortcut has a background colour and there is no start button, that's it. Plus the Metro apps look great, very simple clean UI and very usable, nothing wrong with the OS at all, I likely won't upgrade but I already know I'll be keeping 2 license keys for myself. Windows 8 is cheap anyway it's cheaper than a single video game. Anyway give it some time and I bet someone releases a hack/mod that makes it basically Windows 7. In fact MS will probably release it themselves.

I expect that windows 7 SP2 will bring nearly all windows 8 features to windows 7 without the sh!tastic metro fail tiles.

I'm just going to stick to 7. If 8 is just like 7, but with metro, whats the point? There ARE new features that 8 seems to have that 7 doesn't, but they are features I don't need anyway.

Windows 8 boots up a few seconds faster on my computer than Windows 7 did. And the new Task Manager is awesome.

GummiRaccoon

the tiles are useless, but it doesn't matter. I type all my items and the search is extremely quick.

a few problems, you can't set an application's properties from the tiles interface... pretty lame

but another nice thing about windows 8, the sounds like when you start mistyping a folder name to quickly get to it, are way less anoyying. It's all pleasant.

Microsoft is copying xbox360 sounds, which are rip off of Wii sounds.

oh and the only reason i upgraded on my desktop was because my msiexec was broken

thankfully windows8 upgrade fixed it

because dem sounds

also it's nice having your settings synched across windows 8 pcs (like profile picture, and random stuff, mail settings)

also it feels faster, could be my imagination or mostly because of the smooth transitions.

I'm probably going to get 8. A big part of me wants to use Leap motion(an excuse to spend about 70 or so extra dollars :3) with it and pretend to be Norman Jayden or something on occassion with metro for the lulz :D

Other than that, Since I'm hearing it is less resource hungry....Have their been any gaming performance updates on 8 since the last time?

I'm wanting to upgrade for the increased optimization for multicore CPUs & the Bulldozer series chips are "supposed" to perform a lot better under that operating system. I downloaded the W7 Hotfixes and my pc runs perfectly fine, but if Windows8 makes it a little better then why not.

Lol for ANYONE actually still on XP I would highly recommend you do not upgrade to Windows 8. It will probably drive you crazy due to the retarded way it was design where Win7 would feel like you never left XP but rather improved it.

Also the windows 8 task manager is a joke, so useless.

i am sure microsoft actually tested that, that's something they kind of had to test a lot.

how useful it is, well it's not useful at all

you can't do xp 32 bit to win8 64

and using a32bit os for a modern desktop is pointless, keep xp32 if you have legacy hardware.

What are you talking about? There are a lot of tabs, the task manager is much better.

That's the problem its just a big coloring book and for some reason they thought it'd be a good idea to place the applications and services in the same tab, the only time I use the task manager is to kill a task and I don't know why I'd need to look through a list of stuff running that I don't care about. The task manager doesn't even list the cpu n memory usage +processes count in the lower right.

I can actually do more from the windows 7 Task manager and get more information from it then you could from the windows 8 one without actually flipping througth the sections. Can't even start a new task from the damn thing.

That looks like a lot of crap on your screen that you really don't need. Doesn't this look just a little more simplier? Hey look I can still see my cpu usage, ram processes and even start new tasks all from one page. Windows 8 is like do you want to kill a task? Welcome to the dictionary B****!

Yeah I am just still not digging Win8, other than the startup time it's worse than vista, takes longer to basically do everything basic such as accessing shortcuts like cmd, msconfig, mycomputer ect, everything basically has an extra step to it, unless it's pinned to your bar it's going to take longer to get to. When an OS needs two desktops to do one task you know there's something wrong.

Hidden apps It can be hard to find programs meant for the old-style Windows desktop if you dont know where to go.From the desktop screen, you cannot launch desktop apps that arent already pinned to the Taskbar. Thats because the Start button is gone. Lets say you use theCalculator appoften. To access it, you have to go to the Start screen, right-click the screen, go to the bottom right-hand corner and select All Apps, then select Calculator. Once Calculator is open on the Desktop, you need to pin it to the Taskbar or you have to go through all of those steps again the next time you want it.

Basically If we both had to open the cal app I could open it faster than you and still have time to pin it to my task bar. I could also open Control panel faster. It's just annoying having to travel between two desktops to do one simple thing.

First you'd have to hit the windows key, go to the second desktop, find the app then pin it or else due all that all over again.

Win7 hit windows key type cal press enter done.

You'd basically have to waste your time going through two desktops for each damn app you want to pin or open.

Win7+winkeyt is basically metro just without the useless desktop.

Don't do it man, just get Win7 it's a damn good OS. The gains you get from Win8 are offset by a metric sh*t-ton of bad design decisions. You're far better off with Win7, that much is almost guaranteed.

It's still a slower process, you have to travel between two desktops, click windows key, *wait for second desktop, type cal, select it then wait again to get back to your other desktop to use it. It just isn't gs users that just hate it a lot of people do, all the tech i work with hate it, also kind of silly comparing those OS to a main stream one.

i still wonder what the point of windows 8 actually is.......except to unify the tabler and desktop experience (android tab priced windows tabs with start to appear soon, except with ONLY the metro interface, no classic mode)

Thats what I'm not liking about 8, you have to type everything into a search, whereas in 7 that was optional, and you could pin stuff inside the start menu if you didn't want tons of stuff cluttering up the task bar.

When an OS needs two desktops to do one task you know there's something wrong.

zaku101

?? What task is that? I NEVER use the Metro UI. The desktop is just fine for pretty much anything you need to do. Finding your way around the UI takes some getting used to but nothing drastic.

A lot of interesting points are being made. @msfan1289: Not stupid at all. I'm currently running xp on a system that would probably choke on windows 7 or 8. But like I said this is part of a larger upgrade. When I'm finished, I'll be using an intel i5 3570k processor on a Gigabyte GA-z77X-UD5H mobo with a 500 Gb hdd and Corsair Vengeance 8 Gb RAM. The video card is a GeForce 9800 GT (to be upgraded later) and my ps will be a Kingwin Lazer Platinum Series 550w. Also, I was wondering if anyone remembered when Windows 7 came out, whether retail stores offered slashed prices on Windows Vista? Thanks!

Win7+winkeyt is basically metro just without the useless desktop.

uhm
to open calculator
hit start(or the windows key)
type calc
hit enter

which is the exact same steps required for win7

i realy dont think you guys even know how windows 8 works tbh

they did a decent job for desktop

but gs is full o dem haters

but then again i've used gnome, kde, and xfce, unity, and they all blow compared to win8. Just to give you a comparison.

Thats what I'm not liking about 8, you have to type everything into a search, whereas in 7 that was optional, and you could pin stuff inside the start menu if you didn't want tons of stuff cluttering up the task bar.

well ii only type s it's good for me but if you don't then yes that's a huge issue

You... can pin... to the start menu now, only instead of a minor list of 10 items, you can have rows and rows of things you want across your screen...

Windows 7 is superior to Windows 8 in every single way.

The only people who will upgrade are casuals who play with tablet apps all day.
