Irony has it that, the MS OS work quite well, and often gives far more in options then a Mac OS... has been a while, since Ive used a Mac (back when they insisten on that silly 1 butten mouse).

But for the needs I had, the Mac os they had back then (looked like a win 98 knockoff to be blunt) underperformed at multitasking. And the graphics department? well the Adobe company allready had the upper hand back then

People use a MS OS, because it is reliable, its easy to use, easy to master, easy to figure out, and it is cheap.

There are alternatives out there, the Mac has thier OS line (I heard the newer ones are better then back in the day where it felt like 2 bricks grinding together). there is the Linux esque Obunto and its sucessors.

But people usually goes back to Windows to rid themselves of the headache, the PC is a "free platform" you are not forced to use any specific OS, and unlike some people who thinks that the general public is unaware of this, are grosely mistaken.

You pretty much cant open a news paper, without being informed about alternate OS types, and Browsers here where I live (and we are Not exactly the most tech happy people in the world)

It's true, Microsoft lost a lot of marketshare with the initial launch of Vista. Truth be told, at first luanch it was pretty buggy, but it didn't take long to get fixed. Truth be told Apple saw an oppurtunity and capitalized on it. They launched their aggressive "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" ad campaign, which truly convinced those who weren't informed or had ever even used Vista that it was a terrible OS. Microsoft's "Mojave" experiment clearly showed how ill informed people actually were (it's the experiment where they took Vista, reskinned it and showed it to Vista haters, who for the most part ended up liking it.)

I think Windows 7 is a step in the right direction for Microsoft, their beta got a lot of attention in a lot of places, and many people praised for fixing where Vista fell a bit short. This at least showed people that Microsoft was listening to the customers. I have no objection to MAC OS X, I just think Apple rips people off on the hardware side of things. You can get much more capable hardware with a Windows machine.

OEM computers are partly too blame too, manufacturers grossly underpowered Vista machines fully aware the new OS was more resource hungry. Also preloaded software, or "bloatware" that they load would greatly slow down the machines as well, causing problems that weren't actually Vista's fault. That is one benefit of Apple selling MACs, they monitor what software is put on their machines so they not it'll at least run good, whereas makers like Dell can underpower a machine and load it with a "Dell application" that connects to the internet, checks for updates, acts like a security center etc... which makes your machine a slow attention hungry pain in you know what

In conclusion, Windows 7 is a good place for Windows to go. MAC isn't bad, I wouldn't want to pay that much for the hardware though, plus little gaming support

I'm not gonna get into the Mac vs PC debate. But I just say that I wouldn't mind some sort of "lite" version of Windows that would be targeted for gamers. Not sure what that would be like, it shouldn't be too different to force us to use it, games should work on any version of Windows. But it could be less bloated, more customizable and perhaps offer some integrated features for gaming etc. But unfortunately it seems MS would rather have people gaming on 360, and using Windows for other stuff. That way they can charge us twice.

Wow. this is the stupidest thing I have read around here in awhile. I think there is substantial debate that Mac OS is better than Microsoft. More importantly what are yo talking about "cut down their losses and costs to regain market share"? Microsoft currently has an 87.75% market share with Mac having 9.81%. This is roughly the same percentage market share that Mac had in the late 80's. Mac is not even in the same league as Microsoft and the OS segment of Microsoft brought in. Microsoft made over 3 billion dollars last quarter in a down year primarily because of Windows and Office. Also your incompatibility in games is mostly due to people having different hardware, not operating systems. Most compatibility issues are driver related. Mac conveniently gets around this by standardizing their hardware and then charging you a huge premium on what should be a reasonably priced computer.

Microsoft's marketshare has barely changed. The fact of the matter is that Vsta got alot of undeserved negative press. But it could have been very easy for Apple to have taken advantage of that and really make a dent against Microsoft.

But they never did.

I really dont know why. They probably focused entirely too much on the oPod and iPhone and let a golden opportunity fly right by them.

I have a light version of Windows. I have 2 Windows, dual boot...on 2 separate hard drive. - Windows 1: I use for everything....email, web browsing, antivirus, downloading, movies etc etc - Windows 2: JUST FOR GAMES. It has no inet connection, no antivirus...nothing installed except games. I can't believe how not more people do this, or haven't realized the difference in performance you get. I compare my RAM usage and running processes between the 2, and the difference is HUGE. Also, I never have bug problems, or crashes...since the second Windows is acting like a PS3 or XBOX Operating System....just there for games..... u should try it !!!

Its probably a pain in the ass to switch between Windows 1 and 2. And some people like to surf the web while waiting for a game to load (as in your hosting a game waiting for people to join so you mini, look some stuff up, re maximize to make sure its not full yet, etc.

I think Win7 is going to change much of MS's bad image from the past few years. I've been using it since beta and I can't say enough about it. Gaming performance is better as well as general computing. It looks and feels better as well. So far, it's certainly a worthy upgrade from XP.

- If it's something like COD4 online...I have it on my normal Windows...so I can quickly jump from Messenger to an online battle.

- If people are surfing the net while a game loads....then they should stop. It's not good for the game and uses the RAM more.

- I have it mostly for single player games. So when I turn on my PC, I already know if I'm gonna chat...or play single player games...and therefore know where to boot.

If waiting an extra 40 seconds for another OS to boot for a great steady framerate, without bugs...without crashes....then it's worth it.

to Maddie you obviously have not tried out the new macbook with the new OSX or OSX snowleopard. I am an avid PC gamer, but the Mac OS kicks a lot of butt. I mean please... you dont need to freaking defragment on a mac... thats just one of the thousands of plus perks of a mac.

I didnt say its better for gaming. but as an OS in general is super simple, super fast, no bugs, no defrags necessary, no security issues, fresh and beautiful interface, innovative, continuously has software that simplifies the OS usage even more.

errr... technically you dont need to defrag Vista either you know... its an automatic process in the background service, that does alittle at a time, all the time, altho you can activate a full blown defrag...

But no, as I said my experiences with the Macs were in the 98 days, sadly those 2 years, jaded my life quite a bit... I mean, I have NEVER seen an OS that were that horrible, even DOS was preferred by most of us back then (and DOS was slow).

pretty much the same effect you get when you buy a pc somewhere and the company leaves you a disaster (you tend to never buy from there again)

Ahahahha Macs are totally useless... it's just not games. They can't run exe files, because they are based on UNIX, it's already too late, Microsoft has basically won that part. So what use is there for a mac.... dur.... nothing. Servers? Absolutely not. Linux is for that, a proper OS that is based off of UNIX which knows where it belongs.

Yes there are security issues only linux distros and unix distros are free of viruses(except rootkits which all os's are vulnerable too, but you'd have to run them as root)

How is a mac "innovative"? Why does it need to be simpler? It's simpler for people who don't know how to turn on a computer, and they are idiots.

While this might be true, lets remember that Win7 is just trying to correct performance issues, the interfaces imo are boring, and the security crap are still going to be present. When you are a semi-monopoly in the OS world, it is proven economically, that the company will fallback on the advancements in quality of their product. Vista was exactly such an outcome. I am sorry guys but seriously Vista was crap, and now that we have hardware to compensate for the bad OS people think Vista is good. Win7 might be better performance wise... still not a great OS. Obviously the best one out there for gaming though. Imagine if Apple caught onto the gaming industry really well with a gaming friendly OS with outstanding hardware to match it... MS would go down the drain. What is keeping MS up is computers cheaper prices, gamers, and uninformed individuals. Microsoft needs a completely new makeover in my opinion. A new image.

Despite the fact that I complete disagree with MAC OS being better than windows (further I detest it) it's not the main point to this thread so I'll leave it. MS don't care enough about gaming to do this, they want to keep things as they are, monopoly. It's low cost for them, high return. It's just a real shame than Linux and Mac OS also don't seem to care about gaming. If Linux for example focused on getting gamers across above all else the rest would soon follow and windows share would plummett. Apathy is the name of the game, everybody has it nobody wants to get rid of it. I see Windows moving into more a Mac OS feel anyway, probably slowly as again they don't make huge changes with their OS due to the monopoly

Yeah, but a hacker can infiltrate your precious Macbook in less than 18 seconds. Only 18 seconds. And it is super fast because Mac has nothing on it. It is a lazy program with barely any intensive programs except for Final Cut Pro. And the rate of security issues for Mac's have skyrocketed and will increase more as they continue to grow in popularity. I think Vista is more beautiful. I think Vista is more innovative. And simple OS = lack of customization and power. Plus, at least Windows has 20+ experience of dealing with security infiltration, viruses, blah blah blah. Apple barely has 1.

Interface is beautiful, I love it, performance is great. Only an idiot cares what an OS looks like, I bet you're the type of person who wants aero or some crap enabled on a server OS, or would never touch a CMI only OS. Also the performance is great, that is the second most important thing of an OS, security comes first. The reason Macs are more "secure" that Windows is because they run a UNIX wannabe system. So you have to make a virus deliberately for a Mac, because they won't work on it's cousins Linux and Unix because they are far more secure, because if you want to do something that requires admin, you go in the terminal and type sudo or su. Which makes perfect sense, Microsoft sort of tried to copy this with UAC, but I think it sucks. Macs are not more secure, I'm not sure where people get this, they are very vulnerable to the viruses that are out there for them, sure there are less, but they are easier to create viruses for. There was a competition a few years back where a hacker would go up to a computer and see how fast they could gain root privs if they were a "guest" account. They had time in advance to prepare of course and bring stuff on a usb, Macs took about 2 seconds or something, Windows took about 10 minutes or an hour, and some Linux distro, well they couldn't.

Also have you seen the cube interface of gnome with compiz? (KDE has something similar)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxfSwzhSn1c&feature=fvwe2

I am so sad to hear this ignorance coming from you. Im an idiot for liking what I see? If i can have a beautiful interface as well as a fast and nonbugged one... Im sorry for being so stupid... pffft.. your trolling is unnecessary. Its like saying if you had the money you would buy a ugly car that goes fast instead of a beautiful sports car with amazing great speed. You sir are an idiot for not being open minded.

Quit being a douchebag. I dont know anything of your technical rants. But excuse me I have had a PC laptop before, crashes, viruses, lags, bugs, ugly boring OS. mac on the otherhand... not one single problem. your technical rants are redudant unless they actually mean anything. I assure you if u choose a laptop you never waste ur time with a macbook. again as I said before though PC is much better for gaming.

I personally don't value the looks of an OS. What is the point of a beautiful interface if it can't even install 70% of the games out there today? So, in contrast with your cars, it is more of the "I have the ugly car that goes fast while you have a sports car with no engine." I have had plenty of problems with Mac's, and I see plenty of problems of Macs, if not more compared to Windows PC's. And what is this I hear about Macbook battery's exploding and power connectors going on fire? And the reason why Windows has a plethora of buggy software is because people actually want to develop on the Windows platform. Not the Mac platform.

Wait... I've been using Windows for like 15 years, and I've never had a problem with viruses. Maybe it's because I viewing porn sites and clicking ads isn't the best idea eh?

Ok, let me clear up a few things before I continue to read stupidity....

VISTA: defrag IS needed, even if it runs in the background and brings the performance down. It is NTFS, which is a system that puts files all over the place (explained simply), so defrag is needed.

MAC: for that post: it is NOT bug free....and it is NOT security free.... I fix about 5 MacOS per week....not as many as Windows of course, but for anyone who thinks the MAC OS is perfect....wake up.

So, in contrast with your cars, it is more of the "I have the ugly car that goes fast while you have a sports car with no engine." true, but ur exploding issues are rare cases. Apple has created an OS with an image. it is not a gaming OS. We are clear with that. therefore the fact that it cant do gaming should not be factored in whether mac OS is better or not. I have had plenty of problems with Mac's, and I see plenty of problems of Macs, if not more compared to Windows PC's. maybe ur just lying to prove your point. plus maybe u need fifty million anti viruses to protect you. Im sorry if a macuser can go on plenty of these pornsites and click on ads and not get jacked by a virus.

ok and im mad at myself for bringing this to a debate. Lets get back on track and think about a optimized Gaming OS. maybe a new company should go in that direction.. gain rights to support all games.

[QUOTE="-Unreal-"]

Mac OS is better than Windows in a gaming forum? Really. Come on.

bluebusiness

I didnt say its better for gaming. but as an OS in general is super simple, super fast, no bugs, no defrags necessary, no security issues, fresh and beautiful interface, innovative, continuously has software that simplifies the OS usage even more.

It may not require defrags but it sure as hell has bugs and security issues. There is a hacking competition every year in Vancouver BC in which they setup 3 machines running the latest versions of Windows, Mac, and a popular distribution of Linux. They then allow people to hammer at the system until they break, the first person to do so wins the money and the computer they broke into. Guess who got nailed first? OS X. And as for bugs, I'm sure you never have heard of the spinning ball of death?

Come on man, get your head out of the clouds and get realistic. Computers aren't perfect and there will always be something to break or be exploited.

Oh and before you say "No, they never broke into a Mac" here is the proof:

Proof

I don't think anyone here is arguing against you that Macs are perfect. If it's easy for you to operate more effectively and meets your needs well then swell. That's how the economy works, you buy what meets your needs. I think what most people here are arguing is that you get a better value out of a PC with Windows due to cheaper hardware and the flexibility of the Windows operating system, be it server, home, media creation, or corporate use, if you're willing to go through the slightly longer maintenance cycle, which isn't too hard if you've got a decent AV/Firewall and defrag now and then.
