I have been thinking to switching to windows 7 because I feel the need to upgrade. Vista does it for me, but everyone keeps talking about 7. Should I upgrade? is it worth it?

And also, what is the difference between 32 bit and 64 bit because i think i might have to upgrade to 32 bit if i needed to because it wont go to 64 bit.. what does that mean? Thanks

Presuming your version of Vista is fully updated, I say don't waste your money in upgrading. 7 is great, but Vista is perfectly usable, especially after all the updates.

Also, you don't really need 64-bit unless you have more than 3 gigs of RAM. Basically 32-bit is an older archetecture, whereas 64-bit is the newer one. But most programs you'll use work with 32-bit, whereas some programs might have compatibility issues with 64-bit still.

Windows 7 is basically Vista, but faster, easier to use, and a lot less buggy. 32-bit lets you use up to 4gb of ram (this includes ram and vram in your video card) and 64-bit lets you use like 120 something so if you have like 4gb of ram and then a video card with like 1gb of vram get 64-bit or you won't be using all of it. I personly went from Vista 64-bit to 7 64-bit and windows 7 is just so much better. Vista was like the stairs between XP and 7. Kinda like from Windows 98 to 2000 then xp. Vista was basically what 2000 was.

64-bit remaps the memory hole from 3GB to over 4GB, assuming your BIOS supports memory remapping and also supports EFI BIOS's along with hardware DEP. As for Vista, kill it and get 7.

I've never had any compatibility issues with windows 7 64-bit. I had a few problems with Vista 64, but not one problem with 7.

I'm having quite a few. :(

Namely old games like Deus Ex and Fallout 1 and 2. Most programs still work.

Yes, it's worth if your going to 64bit. 64bit allows for more memory, faster bus speeds, which means faster computing.

Well, I have 32-bit vista, and 4gb of ram. That makes me eligible for 64 bit windows 7?

If you have 4 gigs then yes it does. I still say save your money, but it's really your call. You'll see improvement, but nothing worth buying a whole new OS for. This is in my opinion, of course. It seems most others say it's worth it so look at my advice with a grain of salt.

Vista fully updated, is pretty much windows 7, minus some very MINOR changes, and eye candy..

Is really not any faster than Vista, or provide better performance in games.

Windows 7 is pretty much an over-glorified Windows Vista without having to carry around the burden of the name Vista.

No. It would be better to get more RAM.

Edit: Never mind that, since you have 4GB RAM, which is the max allowed by 32-bit, and is more than enough these days.

Actually it is faster and barely faster than xp in certain areas. Google some benchmarks.

Oh I have, and it isn't that much faster, in games, you don't get but maybe 1-3 fps increase, which isn't even enough to mention. (and that is only on some games, most games, the performance is practically identical)

Also if you wish to look at certain benchmarks, Vista on some games, is even 1-3 fps faster than xp. But again not enough to mention.

TC you would really just be wasting your money, so you can say you don't have Vista anymore, even though Win 7 is an updated Vista.

The step up from Vista to Windows 7 is rather negligable. In large part it's just cosmetic changes and updates to Vista, but the changes are far from astronomical. Nothing like XP to vista

I agree 100% with Lach. Win7 is Vista with a fresh coat of paint basically. From someone who has used both OSes, they are both great. The upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit would be more worth than Vista to 7, but even that is small.

I could see doing the upgrade to Win7 64-bit if I were running a 32-bit version of Vista. Overall I don't think it's a worthy upgrade for Vista x64 users though. Windows 7 is really just another update of Vista. I have Win7 on my laptop, and Vista x64 on my desktop. For all intents and purposes they're the same OS in my eyes.
