I just installed a new DVD Burner and Windows XP now hangs at the loading screen just before the login screen. I had this problem not long ago when I installed a new video card and I think it is because Windows is not recognizing the mouse anymore. If I booted in safe mode Windows would boot up but at first it didn't recognize the mouse but after a short while it did and I was able to login.

When I installed the video card it finally let Windows load up but that was after many reboots. That is not working this time. I have tried using two different mice and plugging them into many different USB ports. AT the DOS screen during boot the light on the mouse is on but once it gets to the loading screen the light on the mouse turns off. This is one reason why I don't like upgrading hardware because Windows is very fussy sometimes.

I know if I reinstall Windows it will see my mouse and after a lengthy process of reinstalling everything all over again everything will work fine. I know I shouldn't have to do that though when I am just replacing a DVD drive. Anyways I think it is a problem with Windows not recognizing the mouse but I am not positive about that. Maybe someone has a better explanation or knows a solution to this problem?

Can you boot into safe mode? Does it find the new dvd drive? If you thne boot into regular mode it hangs? Seems kind of strange, perhaps you already had some problem with windows, as changing a dvd drive or video card should not cause those kinds of problem.

Yes it lets me get into Windows if I use safe mode but it takes a little while at first for it to recognize the mouse and the keyboard I think which are plugged into the USB ports. Once I am in safe mode and chose restart I pick start Windows normally but again it will just sit there at the loading screen. Only way I can get into Windows is with safe mode.

It did this for me too on first boot... just try another USB port or mouse.

It shows that the DVD drive is working. I have tried plugging into different USB ports but it only lets me into Windows in safe mode. I have no idea what is going on but I am pretty sure a fresh install of everything would solve the problem. Any ideas?

You might try booting up in diagnostic mode, the mode where it shows you each driver being loaded and see what the last one it gets to.

It is working now. I disconnected the DVD drive and was able to log into Windows without using safe mode. Then I turned off the computer and reconnected the DVD drive and again Windows booted up without me having to use safe mode. So everything is working fine now. I am still not sure what the cause of the problem could be?

I don't think it was a lose cable because I checked those a few times and everything was secure. I guess that might have been the problem. I am wondering if I disconnected the old DVD drive and then rebooted before hooking up the new one if that would have made any difference? Letting Windows first realize that the DVD drive has been disconnected before a new one was put in? I am not sure if that makes any difference at all?

Anyways it is all working now so thanks to those who gave me some tips on what to do.
