I have windows XP on this computer but am planning to build a new one. Do i have to buy a new version of windows xp for a new lincense or is there anyway I can use the same version? Would save me £60.

Supposedly once you change the Motherboard it ceases to be the same machine so you either need to reactivate or buy another licence.tautitan123

Windows OEM takes a survey of your hardware and when you upgrade/update certain things it'll say that you're trying to use it in a different machine, even though you could just be changing one thing.
Every time it boots it does this little check. Upgrading the mobo is one of the things that will disable your liscence. You can however break your current mobo, and then ring up MSoft saying that your mobo has broken and you need to replace it so can you have a new liscence. Not sure if it'll work though. I just bought a new liscence when I built my comp.
Thx lol.. tell me more bout reactivating. Does that mean I can deactivate it on this computer and then use the same CD to activate it on my new 1? Thx, qasguy02

I'm assuming this is the OEM version. You might be able to but you'll have to call up microsoft and ask them for a new code.

MS doesn't ask you anything other than its installed on only one PC. It doesn't matter why it deactivates, you can get it re-activated as long as your only using on one PC.
