Anyone remember the pioneer space simulation game, Wing Commander. That game really hasn't aged well, has it? I just tried it out using DOSbox, and didn't really care for it. What do you think of it?

Are you referring to the first wind commander ? because you are talking about a game that was released in 1990 which was TWENTY years ago. I think you would be hard pushed to find anything made 20 years ago that has "aged well".

I personally loved the wing commander franchise, still have them all in boxes somewhere in the house. It many ways it is a shame they never continued the franchise or remade it. However judging by the quality of development these days it is probably best they don't try and butcher a classic like Wing Commander.

I still have the multi-CD Wing Commander IV. No luck making it run without jumping through many hoops. Even I have my limits.

As for anything old, try to see beyond the graphics and the interface. Wing commander has some great gameplay. If you like freelance space games try elite3: frontier first encounter, it's old but still huge, and if you want something new get X3: terran conflict, that game is just amazing, VERY steep learning curve though

didnt play wing commander but i did play freespace which i found out recently had some serious community updates after the source engine for the game was released.

should check out the bottom one if you ever played freespace but in the mods section i came across this website i think you will be pleased.

the first link is well worth checking out if you like space sims, links to a few total conversion mods for FS2, including a complete babylon 5 conversion mod and 2 BSG and a starwars conversion/mods being built.

I never had the pleasure of playing the original Wing Commander, or the first few sequels. I LOVED Wing Commander Prophecy and Secret Ops. Those games were badass. Still some of my favorite space sims, along with the Freespace games.

I played Wing Commander back when it was released and I didn't think it had good game play even back then. :P

I can't count how many hours I played that game and its sequels. What a great game! Even the plot was good. It would be great if somebody revived it. I'd definitely buy it!

Wing Commander Prophecy and X-Wing VS Tie Fighter are the best flight sims ever.

What happend to the space combat genre? I know there is X, but thats moretaking influence fromElite rather than the pure space combat stuff.

That was like the only flight game where I enjoyed the combat. If I remember right they did a decent job with the story too. And Mark Hamill was in it! :o

Xcom, UFO defense has aged well..... It'll be 20 years old in 3 years. The oldest wing commander I remember playing was Privateer. Why it hasn't aged well is because it's a 2D game simulating 3D, much like Doom, and 3D Wolfenstein. Think the oldest Wing Commander game that used real 3d, thanks to 3Dfx's Glide Engine, was Prophecy.
