is it dead? tested usb ports, they're working so that's not the problem.

Which controller did you get exactly? Was it actually labeled as a 'wired Xbox 360 controller for Windows'? Or is it just a regular Xbox 360 controller? Because from what I understand, regular Xbox 360 controllers (wired) will not work on the PC. I have an adapter for my wireless Xbox 360 controller, which works, but the controller won't work when it's plugged into the computer with the play-and-charge cable and the adapter removed.
Any wired 360 controller will work for the PC. You just can't use a wireless through the plug and play USB cord. You need a wireless adapter for wireless 360 controllers...Which controller did you get exactly? Was it actually labeled as a 'wired Xbox 360 controller for Windows'? Ah, I see! So a standard wired Xbox 360 controller will be detected properly by the computer for full use, as in, it'll register correctly without constantly flashing? Because a buddy of mine got a wireless one but didn't get the wireless adapter, thinking the controller would be detected as a controller with the play-and-charge cord, which I now figured is not the case, so I can tell him to either get a wireless adapter or return it and get a wired one.
Edit: So for a wired controller, does it still need to be the "for Windows" kind?
this is the one i have at the link below. ive had it for months. worked perfectly. now my pc will not detect it and the green light is out when plugged in. im guessing its dead. i have hardwood floors and dropped it a lot. probably what happened.

Any wired Xbox 360 controller will work fine. Doesn't have to specify "For Windows."try it on a laptop or another computer. If it doesnt work then i take it the controller no longer work!this is the one i have at the link below. ive had it for months. worked perfectly. now my pc will not detect it and the green light is out when plugged in. im guessing its dead. i have hardwood floors and dropped it a lot. probably what happened.
