Hey guys, with my new laptop on the way I am looking to build a secure wireless network. I am going to be buying a new Wireless-N router here before long because my current router is a hard wired one.

I don't want to throw away a perfectly good gigabit hard wired router...so I came up with this idea:

If I were to hook either the hard wired router or the wireless router to my modem, and then daisy link the other router onto a LAN of the router hooked up to my modem would the two firewalls conflict with each other? Technically one router is "above" another in my network, which is why I believe this will work. In case it helps, I have drawn a cute little diagram to aid in what I am trying to do:

Will this work without trouble?

What's the point of that D-Link, exactly?

You'd have to turn off DHCP on the D-Link to turn it to a switch, or it would conflict with the wireless router. But there's no point in doing that.

i actually have my network setup like that. it's just that i have an extra router laying so why not just use it as well

but yeah you need to turn off DHCP on one of your router.

The point of the D-Link would be to serve as an extra SPI/NAT hardware firewall for my wired connections. I know it may sound stupid but yeah...

So turn off DHCP and assign the D-Link a static IP address? What if I put the wireless router above the D-Link router? Would I have to turn DHCP off on the Wireless? Or can will I be ok turning DHCP off on the D-Link?

it don't matter which router you have to disable DHCP, as long as you have only one DHCP server (either your wireless or your wired router)
