The Witcher is the best choice, but don't be frightened at the beginning, because the game starts to be good in the second act, it is a very good RPG. Mass Effect has an awesome story but the gameplay isn't that good.
You want a well balanced game in both story and gameplay, get Witcher, you want an awesome story get Mass Effect, you want to have a good time this summer, get both ;).
ideally get both. id advise ME now and wait for the enhanced edition fo the witcher coming in august or so. itll fix a few things liek the translation in places.

I have both and while both games are very good, I personally like The Witcher better, the story line is great, its fun, and a pretty long game, so I'd go with The Witcher. Also, if you do go with The Witcher, buy the uncensored version.

It depends, both are great games, although I much prefered ME, its easy to play, and the story flows really well, plus i found the combat style to be superior. Plus its really easy to get into. But really, its what you like, if you enjoyed KOTOR then i would go ME, but if oblivion was more your thing then i would suggest the Witcher
Personaly I love them both. But I've only played through the Witcher once. I've played through ME twice and will finsih it a thrid time in a few months. Then again, I'm more of a Sci-Fi guy to begin with. Also, the ME novel is a pretty decent prelude (does have it dry momments though) to the game. But as has already been stated, flip a coin. You cant go wrong with either. Or pick based on fantasy or science ficion. Whats your poison?

Indeed, at the beginning of M.E. it's quite slow-paced but then, it's like you actually enter the living world of Mass Effect where every NPC you encounter is seemingly living.
I have played both games (ME for the 360), and ME is way better. Bioware just "gets" rpg's. ME has a much better story, Witcher is probably a longer game, and the combat and rpg elements are much better in ME. That is not to say Witcher is bad, it is very good, but I definetly recommend ME.

I'd say both are must buys. I'd say Mass Effect has WAY better voice acting and the slight edge in gameplay (more exciting missions), but The Witcher has the slight edge in story and a 'je ne sais quoi' factor that puts it just a tiny bit ahead of ME in my book. So I can't say anything but get both - perhaps what the others say is wise: get ME now and get The Witcher Enhanced in September (new release date).
