Just bought the Witcher EE on Steam a few days ago, my first ever steam purchase, and my first time back in PC gaming for a number of years. I"m old school, grew up on PC, but fell out of it after college. Anywho, I'm a few hours in, on the outskirts of Vezina (sp?) and I'm at the point where I need to kill the ghouls in the crypt. I get the key, I go over there, I click on the door, and nothing happens. I cannot enter the crypt. I tried to enter some other cave as well, can't do it. I deleted the game and redownloaded, same problem. The little door icon opens, but no transition and no loading of an interior setting. I simply cannot progress in the game without this (at least I think so.) I sent a message to steam support, but no answer yet. I've looked on Atari's site, no help.

Any suggestions?

Normally, I would say patch the game, but I believe Steam does that automatically. Also, you may want to try updating your GFX driver. If you haven't played in years, maybe that hasn't been updated either.

That or you just have the wrong key.

Why haven't you gone for the source? Ask your question at http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/, one of the most mature and helpful communities I've come across.

Sounds like you've missed something in the questchain , It's ages since I played the witcher thou.

It's the right key, because the quest log directs me over there. Unless I'm really missing something, but after years and years of rpg gaming, I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track!

I just got the new computer two weeks ago, brand new asus laptop with all the goodies (I5 and a Geforce GTS 360m), I know it's not as good as a new desktop, but I"m running this game on high with no issues, and I just did the nvidia driver update the day I got the computer. I had Steam check all of the files to make sure they were all updated. I'm frustrated that my first foray back into PC gaming is hitting this bump....makes me not want to invest in any more computer RPG's, even though I specifically waited to get a better PC to get Dragon Age. Ugh.

Do you need to go at a certain time of day? I don't remember that quest very well.

Hmm...I see nothing that would indicate that, but I'll try various times by meditating a few hours and trying again.

Nothing I've seen would indicate that is the issue though.

Sorry you're having trouble. You may want to try googling that particular quest to see if anyone else has been having issues as well. It's been a while for me as well, but I don't remember running into that bug.

Yeah, that's the one. I got a reply on a Witcher forum saying they've heard of it in some areas, but never in 3 different areas like I have. If I can't get this resolved, I'd sure like a refund and exchange for a game that actually works! (I know, I know...)

You might try this... it's not exactly the problem you are having, but is very similar. You might make a backup of your .sav savegame files beforehand, which the instructions don't tell you to do. Q: The game crashes when i try to leave the swap/cemetery or I get "Cannot load module. invalid IFO file", what can i do? A: The issue is the one known as the IFO module error, you get that error when trying to to change zone (mostly in chapters 2 and 3). To fix this, you need to make some manipulations, first, if you are under XP, go to my computer, get on your C drive, open the tools menu -> Folder options, View tab. In there, look for "Hidden files and folders", click on show hidden files and folder. Next look for "Hide protected operating system files", uncheck it. If you are under Vista, go to the control panel and look for folder option, the rest of the procedure is the same : View tab. In there, look for "Hidden files and folders", click on show hidden files and folder. Next look for "Hide protected operating system files", uncheck it. Now, start the game, and load your savegame ( normal savegame, not quick or auto ). Once it is loaded, press ALT-Tab to get out of the game, go to the following folder: Windows XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\The Witcher\temp\saves\ Windows Vista/7: C:\User\\AppData\Local\The Witcher\temp\saves\ In that folder, delete all the files that end with the .SAV extension. Then go back in the game, move around a bit, save your game and reload it. The problem should be fixed.

Thanks for the effort...but no luck. I guess I'll just wait for Steam to respond.

That sounds really weird. I never encountered any glitches in my two playthroughs. To be honest, it sounds like an anomalous bug to me. You know, no one else has had them and the only way to fix it is a general solution like what guynamedbilly has suggested. Also yeah, try witcherforums. They're brilliant.

I set up an account over there, and got one response, but nothing useful just yet. Hopefully this weekend brings some answers.

Bleh, sorry to hear that OP...it must be frustrating.

As a last resort someone could give you a save game after that quest.

You need the key from the guard,he will give you the quest, you can play dice wih him,he is first at the gate near the mill and the on the other. It deepends how far you went with the investigation, avoid talking to the Revernd till you did everything.

As far as I remember after lighting the candles and talking to the reverend, the only place you can go is the cave with Abigail, and that will start the final sequence of that chapter,Could you post your completed quests?

If nothing works, I recommend you ask someone for a save game where someone already completed the ghoul quest. Haven't got the Witcher installed at the momemt, but if nobody can help you I'll check if I don't have a autosave or something.

This is correct, he is one of the three people that ask for your help in the outskirts, he will give you the key and you need to enter it a night time (midnight if memory serves right).

Don't forget to have night potion (so you can see in dark) or torch with you since it's pitch dark in the cave.

All this info is located in your quest info, it just takes little time to read all the text.

Don't let this sour the rest of the game for you. Especially with such a great community behind it. This is only game I know where you can request save games from the developers...really makes you appreciate the company.

I can tell you that I have probably been PC gaming for longer than you've been alive. I began by writing my own games on an old Radio Shack computer where you actually used a cassette tape to load. PC gaming is my roots...HOWEVER, this is the first PC game I've bought in a while, and perhaps you could understand that I am having a bit of frustration in that I am having technical difficulties already. I am NOT implying that PC gaming is the only way to get bugs and glitches, but I have not had any bugs or glitches in the years that I've stepped aside from PC gaming to use consoles (during and after college.) Also, I think you need to check your reading comprehension..I did not say "this is why pc gaming sucks", I said this reminded me of what I didn't like all those years ago about PC gaming. I meant it as a way of commiserating with any other members of this board who know what I'm going through. Thank you for the honest answers and attempted help by the other posters. General..take a breath.

I'm pretty sure I'm up to date on all of the quests, but I really and honestly do appreciate you guys trying to help. On the Witcher forum it was pointed out that I should be able to enter the Inn at any time, and I can't do that either, so take that for what it's worth. Of course, I don't know if I SHOULD be able to enter the Inn, but that's just what I heard.

Fine by me! Honestly, after a reinstall and still no luck, I'd much rather play it on hard than not play it at all, contrary to what some think about my feelings on PC games. I prefer harder settings anyways, I had just read that in this particular game that puts a very big emphasis on the alchemy which I was afraid would bog me down a bit.

Oh yea, one other thing you might try is playing with the compatibility settings. If you are running Win 7 or Vista, right click the Witcher's launch file, probably witcher.exe and click on properties and compatibility options. With the option that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" change it to Windows XP SP2 and try it then. You can try the other compatibility options here and hopefully something somewhere will work. Also, tick that box that says run this program as an administrator. I feel your pain. I couldn't ever get the pc version of Fallout 3 to run on my pc.

I completed the steam version of the witcher with no problems. If I were you I would use the Witcher Wiki. There are some obscure quests in the Witcher that I couldnt have done without the wiki. http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Witcher_Wiki

It worked! Thanks so much..I was getting pretty frustrated. I"ll have to take a close look at the journal to see what you've done that I haven't seen, and exactly how your character was set up, but this is an early enough save that I'm sure I won't miss out on much. Thank you thank you!

It worked! Thanks so much..I was getting pretty frustrated. I"ll have to take a close look at the journal to see what you've done that I haven't seen, and exactly how your character was set up, but this is an early enough save that I'm sure I won't miss out on much. Thank you thank you!

i hope you would have fun playing one of the greatest rpg of the decade.

Latter on you might encounter similarly complex quest flows don`t give up,it`s a game to be played slow, and it`s assuming that the player will apply basic reality logic. It`s however a great game.

Just to be clear, it wasn't an issue with me not being able to get the correct pattern on the quest flows...it was a problem loading up interior settings. I couldn't enter the Inn at any point either, which I was informed over at the Witcher forums that I should be able to do. I clearly had the right key to the crypt, verified it was in my inventory, and had done everything necessary to get inside...it just glitched on me. I get that happens, I was just really wanting to play what seemed to be a very good game. I'm glad I get to continue! I've also checked through his journal quest info, and there were only a few things I hadn't done, none of which applied to entering into the crypt to kill the ghouls. Thanks again for the help everyone! (even those with the sticks up the rears about me being frustrated with a PC game...)

Glad you got it to work. The game starts off kinda slow, but after a few hours becomes amazing. Have a fun run through

Normally, I would say patch the game, but I believe Steam does that automatically. Also, you may want to try updating your GFX driver. If you haven't played in years, maybe that hasn't been updated either.

That or you just have the wrong key.

how in the heck does a graphics card / driver have ANYTHING to do with a game glitch lol. It would only affect graphical things, not scripting -_-

I never said that you were unable to get the proper quest flow, you felt attacked here by other gamers, because of your statement about PC gaming,my XBOX is giving me disk read errors it doesn`t remind me why I dont like consoles when possesing them.

What I was talking about merely was the slightly illogical Reverend problem,so no I wasn`t attacking you as incompetent, sorry If you understood it that way,I just said that there is a similarly problematic quest latter.

I personally think he's just doing something wrong in the game. I've run through it twice, and never had any problems like this.
