looks like an amazing game but I've never been great at RTS's and I'm normally put off by how much there is to learn. I rarely have time to learn what i need in complex games like RTS's.

so my question is will this game be punishingly difficult and is it easy to get into? How would the game run on my rig?

WIC is so not complex. I just got it yesterday, its pretty fun.

But I strongly advise you download the demo if ur unsure.
