So since I'm getting a new laptop for college, I decidedthat I'llstart the new year off right by buying WoW. I've tried to stay away from the game for years but it's just too enticing, and since I'm getting a new laptop I guess I'll give it a shot. I may lose my friends, family, girlfriend, but whatever let's talk specs. I know nothing about computers. I've chosen a Mac laptop, the first Mac I have ever owned. (Don't ask why I chose a Mac.) But since I'm technologically illiterate, I was hoping if you guys could tell me if my Mac can support this game, and if it can't, what will I need for it to support WoW? Also what am I supposed to buy? The standard game, Lich King, or Burning Crusade? Thanks guys!

It'll work on low probably and you need to buy all 3, soon to be 4. Try the 10 day trial to see how it works, after that you can upgrade that account to a full one buy registering your WoW copy which will also give you 30 days of play time, then you register BC and finally WotLK and maybe if you're still into it Cataclysm in a few months :P.

You just upgrade your trial account to a fully active account so you keep everything on the account.

That's great news as well! But do I need to buy a hard copy of the full game or I can just DL it off the Internet?

I actually like to own the hard copies of games so do you think this would be good to buy?

You'll be able to run the game on high settings in the old world zones (kalimdor, eastern kingdoms, and outlands) with the high detail shadows turned off. However once you hit Northrend you'll need to turn the settings down to med-low to keep a decent framerate in Dalaran and 25 man raids.

And yes, you can download the game online (from world of warcraft's website) but you still need to pay for the game / expansions.

Edit: yeah the battle chest is a good buy.. just keep in mind that the game guides that come with it are entirely outdated, but they're still nice for some general info on quests and dungeons.

yea

as far as game copies go, you only need the original but I strongly recommend getting the Burning Crusade simply for the opportunity to play as Draenei or Blood Elf. Their starting zones (levels 1-20) are much faster than anything found in the original game.

Sweet, just a couple of more questions and then I'll stop being annoying... Is it essential that I make a Battlenet account? I have no clue what it is. Also I really don't know much about the game... I've skimmed the site, but is there anything that you guys recommend I read that a newbie should be informed about before starting? Or will I basically just pick up the game as I go along?

the dreanei dont level quickly lol night elf is SOO much faster to get to 20 heck they do 20 during a coffee break :P

the two elf races level the fastest with the orc, troll and dwarf as possibly close second and the humans dreanei, tauren and gnome take up the rear. it also varies on the class to my knowledge the fastest leveling spree ive ever seen is 1-70 in 2 weeks with a blood elf rogue.

I'd advise you to play with some friends makes it alot more fun, reason I stopped playing it was due to friends stopping. But that's after 3 years (on and off abit) I might actually try it again when the Cataclysm expansion hits the stores.

It really doesn't take much to run WoW, your mac should run it fine on medium settings... Certain cities witih LOTS of people in it will make anyones fps drop so don't worry about that.

I advise you to never play WOW. If you like a game that puts you on a schedule then this mmorpg is for you. Quite honestly I have found when I don't play WOW I am in better health, sleep better, get out more and so on. I am done with mmorpgs and really don't recommend anyone playing them as the word casual play can't really be associated with a game like this. Something always brings you to the game and causes a time sink.

DeViLzzz

ahhhh I was wondering when someone like you would pop up.

Anyway, a question: did it ever occur to you why WoW is so popular? Why both hardcore gamers, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, people with girlfriends and jobs, people with no lives at all, and beyond....can enjoy WoW?

Because of its scaleability! It is as casual friendly as it is appealing to the more devoted gamer.

Dont listen to this clown...I've played WoW for pretty much five years now, graduated college during that time, landed and worked a good job, and manage to have a social life.

Yep you need a battle.net account, because that's where you're going to manage your game time and other things, also after you register it on battle.net you can download it from there if you, for example, go somewhere out of the country or just the city and you don't have the discs/it installed :). Imo you shouldn't read guides, pick it up as you go, it's way more fun, but if you do have some problems with certain vague quests, or you can't find a certain NPC, bookmark "thottbot.com" and maybe "wowhead.com" but thottbot has evrything you need.
