I know I am a bit late but I am now interested in PC gaming (taking a break from game consoles).  I watched the video review of WOW and it seems like an interesting game to play.  I am thinking of buying the game but I noticed there were a lot of downloads/patches available since the release.  I recently bought Chronicles of R EFBB and it took forever for the download to complete (I have a very good high speed connection, not dial-up).   Should I get WOW and get all of the necessary downloads?  Is this time consuming?

No , because then World of WARcraft was removed long ago, now its World of Grindcraft, with very little actual WAR involved.

The majority of you are saying no, while some are being sarcastic.  I can't tell who is being serious or not.... So you are saying I should not bother getting the game?  If you hate WOW, explain why...

Is WoW a game??  I thought it was a life-replacement vehicle.  If it is a game, how do you win?

With a suitably highly original remark from you

The majority of you are saying no, while some are being sarcastic. I can't tell who is being serious or not.... So you are saying I should not bother getting the game? If you hate WOW, explain why...

I said why it sucks.

I would explain in detail but then I get flamed by WoW fanboys who cant see theyre being milked for thier time and money on such a fruitless MMORPG, even though Ive played it since release and quit last month.

1) It was good 2 years ago, a outdoor PvP game with some PvE, gear was well balanced, and so were the classes, but that changed, now gear is so ridiculous people 2-3 shot eachother (in an rpg for gods sake), people who play 40 hours a week will tottally cream those that play 10-20 hours a week no matter how good you are.

2) Time again, all the top PvEnviroment (vs monsters) raid 6-7 days a week 6 PM - 1-2AM in order to see the new content, even now guilds like CURSE-GAMING.com havnt done most of it but have played like that for the last 2 years straight (Sad souless requirments to progress if you ask me).

3) Tradeskills are pathetic, you cant make alot of money from crafting (very limited) only gathering, which isvery boring.

4) The World PvP IS DEAD, Arena PvP is very unbalance, BAttleground (big battles) are dying out because Arena weilds better rewards (These rewards require you to play a good portion of everyday, if you lose matchs all that work was for nothing).

5) The PVE never changes, its "Kill these trash mobs , kill same bosses again, here you go 10% chance to get something useful, SEE YOU NEXT WEEK"

6) The class system is unbalanced and outdated.

7) the combat in Raids is 2 button spam for most classes, healing = Wack-a-mole (You barely have time to watch the boss, when learning new fights i barely knew what the boss looked like, too much time whacking healt bars with heals).

8) Takes them 2 months per update, on crucial things, for instance when a boss was too powerful, they took 2 months to downgrade him, preventing people from seeing new content.

Ohhh the list goes on, dont beleive there are 8 million players, tons of players have mulltiple accounts, let along the legion of Chinese Gold Sellers on every server ...8 million ... hahahahahaha.

WoW gave many gamers, both who play MMOs normally and those who don't a game that had what they want basically and that was good.  What happened is the game became an obsession for many gamers and yes, it did become a life replacement interface basically.  It's a fun game, no doubt, and lots of stuff to do.  Problem was that many gamers couldn't quit the addiction to it and it became their life effectively.  If you can keep it light hearted as another fun game to play just like anything else, that's good then, and there's nothing wrong with that.  But if a game goes so much as to become an obsession and even drive to sell your body just for a stupid in-game item, then it's clear you shouldn't be playing.

As someone who has invested over 2000 hours into that game let me tell you that the best thing you can do for yourself is just say no. DO NOT GET WOW. True gamers don't let true gamers do warcrack.

Why shouldn't you get it? Gee, where do I begin? The end game content blows like a cheap hooker. It's nothing more than a clone of the Everquest raiding system. It's frustrating beyond belief and not fun.

The community ranks among the worst of any pay to play mmo. When you aren't seeing spam of who porked this many, or that many imaginary girls and how big their porker is, you can expect a flood of Chuck Norris and Murloc jokes, to which there is one for everything. There is also the kitten bashing discussions, and no child raped from behind commentary along with all other manner of filth native to goldshire and the barrens, but spreads throughout the entire game.

I'll admit that the game USED to be fun. USED TO BE, the expansion ruined everything, along with the class "rebalancing" Blizz enacted around the same time. There is no reason to play as a rogue anymore, and no one wants them anyway. After all, Hunters out dps and out damage them and have traps and a pet that can act as an off tank. Furry warriors work here as well minus the traps and pet. Any gear that requires you to be level 30 is at least item level 35, even the crap drops that are only in the game to be sold to vendor npcs for money. This means that at level 30 you can apply the level 70 enchants and expansion armor kits to your gear, which twinks you to the point the point that you are a one man army. Gold is so plentiful thanks the expansion that people just pay high levels to powerlevel them. No one groups any more because they are being power leveled, and no one groups beyond level 30 because they don't need to. Also, the whole enchant and armor thing ruins pvp. the level 30 tier is no different than the level 10 tier. Expect to get slaughtered as there are no tactics involved with everyone one hitting everyone else for obscene amounts of damage. All that matters is who hits first since they get to survive the encounter.

The expansion itself is horribly designed. The new areas and dungeons all suck and are increadably frustrating to play through, though some of them are pretty to look at.

The bottom line is don't get WOW. Just say no to the Warcrack regardless of how many of your friends are trying to hook you on it. The game is nothing more than a constant repetitious grind up the top where there is nothing fun. Level 70 is where fun goes die.

Wow, maybe I shouldn't have posted on here.

I basically said that I know nothing about PC gaming since I have been playing console games throughout my gaming experience.  I saw a couple of reviews for a few games/multi-online play for the PC and wanted input from those who has experience.  I thought it was sometimes better to get opinions from a players' perspective rather than a GS score.  I didn't think my post would start an all out online debate about this game and receive insults.  Thanks for the positive feedback from those who gave them.   The hell with everyone else who had something sarcastic or negative to say.  Maybe I should keep away from PC games after all since this is the kind of negative energy that results from playing games like WOW.

Thank you for your feedback Cerza.  I will not get it because of your analysis and for the many unnecessary negative responses.  All I asked was for feedback similar to someone who would ask me for advice or tips on something I am skilled at.  Unlike most on here who provide sarcasm and negative energy, I give back to others.

Now hold on a second, you asked our opinions, yet you dont want to here any negativity? Correct, why did you both? :S

I see no insults, I see facts, which you will read day-in day-out on the official WoW forums of the ongoing major issues with the game.

I mean seriously what was you hoping to get from this post other than "Its awesome gogogogo get it"?

WoW gets this negative attention, because its a mindless/addictive second job, you see the fun while leveling, but then ask yourself "Why am I doing this?"

This does not reflect on PC gaming at all, just this 1 game draws so much anguish for a reason.

When you ask such a stupid question, what do you expect?

This is one of the reasons PC gaming is the best: DEMOS AND TRIALS ABOUND!

Just get the free trial of a game to see if you'd enjoy it, or read one of the, i'm sure, abundant in-depth reviews all over the internets.

Come on dude, you have 1300+ posts and you don't know that WoW threads are contentious? There are dozens of threads each week about the very topic you posted about and a one second search by you would have crashed your system, there are that many threads about this topic.

Look, there is a free trial, give a go. Or, you can just go buy the game, it is only $20.

Ill be as blunt as i can be. I've played ever aspect of that game until a few weeks ago when i gave it up, as said above it was fun 2 years ago but it isnt now. Lets just put it this way if you like faceing other human minded people (PvP) you will have to get 2 level 70 to see real pvp and you will have to join an arena team. Now ive you like faces computer controlled things (PvE) then you have to join a raiding guild and raid all evening 5 days aweek ruffly to see the good stuff, you could be the best player in the game but i wont mean s$%* if you dont commit the time. So basicaly its a 2nd job thats good for people no relationships, full time jobs, and people that like to have an active social lives. Sure you can be casual but its not really that fun in my opinion.

Personally I would say get GuildWars instead. There are numerous things about the game that I consider putting it above WoW:

1) Balanced: In some things like PvP there are a number of builds that tend to come top, but most builds can at least decently compete, no particular class has too much power and any skill set can be countered with a little thought. The level cap (20) also helps keep things feeling more balanced and equipment isn't too overpowered, even the rarest items (green) won't give you a huge advantage.

2) Go at your own pace: The game is subscription-free meaning that you can play one hour a week or one hundred hours, in either case it doesn't feel like you are wasting money.

3) Free: In the end, the campaigns are only $40-50 (the original can be found for $30 now), so you end up paying less than you would in WoW by a wide margin, all the campaigns thus far are stand-alone games so you can choose your flavor and ignore the others if you want.

4) Community: Currently its the second-largest ORPG around with around 3 million players counting multiple accounts and I've found the community to be by and large very helpful, there are people who will run you places for free or help you complete quests and missions for free even if they've already done it.

5) Lower System Requirements: The recommended system requirements for Guild Wars are pretty much the same as the minimum requirements for WoW, you can actually play Guild Wars with onboard graphics though you certainly won't get the same performance as a dedicated GPU.

If you want you can even use DX8 to increase performance by inserting "-dx8" in the shortcut target.
