Decided to skip out on the home theater setup right now, and just focus on getting as much out of these headphones as I can. I've been looking at several things you can add to increase the level of SQ from headphones, and I've come across a Fiio E7 and E9 combo for ~200 bucks, give or take.

I'm just wondering if it would actually be worth getting one for my HD 555's. I mean, I have tweaked the EQ settings to my liking for the headphones already, and I can't say I feel like it's missing anything, but I was wondering if it would really give that next jump up in terms of quality in sound. The Head Fi community seems to really like them, and they say it really opens up the clarity in their sources.

Any help is greatly appreciated on this.

For the HD555s? It will sound better but definitely not needed. Not until you got to like the HD600 or higher end headphones will you need one to drive them.

Just a quick question, do the HD600s or higher still sound good and better than the HD500 series even without an amp?

Its quite pointless having something like the HD600s and no amp. It'd be better to stick with the 555s.

Not worth it for an entry-level headphone like the HD555.

So they will sound pretty bad then?

Not bad, just not as good as it can be.

Yeah that was probably a stupid question. Will they still sound better than the 555s without the amp though?

Probably. Not worth it really unless you get an amp to drive them though.

They say to get the best phones you can afford then worry about an amp later, also yah the 650s are debated to be the best open headphones out there.

I say get the amp.

I've got a small tube amp (Qinpu Q2) that sounds pretty damn good with the HD555s.

Sounds even better with my AKG K240s which have a bit higher impedance.
