I'm thinking of upgrading processor from an Intel E5200 to a Q9550. I had the E5200 for about 18 months, OC'd for 12 months stable at 3.75. Has any one here had both of these processors, and if so what kind of gains can be expected? I'm not looking to upgrade my entire rig at the moment so want to stick with the socker 775 for the time being. I also plan on upgrading Graphics card in the summer, currently running a ATI 4850.

I think the only way it's worth it to get a socket 775 quad is if you need better multi-tasking performance, or if you play games that really like quad-core CPUs. An E5200 at that clock speed should be able to blow through almost any game out there. What is your primary use for this rig? You'll actually lose performance in most games unless your overclock the Q9550 to at least 3.7ghz.

Why would you even want to upgrade? People are so strange sometimes.

You would have to overclock it to avoid a performance drop in most games ( ie the ones that dont expressly use 4 cores ).

It has always been my opinion that if the upgraded component @ stock is not an upgrade in ALL situations across the board from the overclocked component its not worth upgrading to.

THats probably quite a good rule of thumb! I've got a e5200 at 3.25 and i just know it'd be awsome at 3.75! sucks i cant overclock it further.

What mobo are you running it on? I run mine on a Foxconn P43A, I only ended up with this as it was dirt cheap at the time. I don't think it had any glowing reviews but it's not that bad a board, well it does the job for me. Plus I was able to overclock without any problems, I have tried to go higher, but then run into problems. Good to know that I should need to upgrade though, means there is more money for a graphics card when the time comes 8)

You wont see a very big difference, just stick with your E5200 until you move platforms. A C2D at 3.75GHz is very capable.

Using a P5QL SE. Problem is I'm using 800MHz RAM, and if I push the FSB further, RAM gets too high, and I can't get around this problem since mobo doesn't have "FSB strap DRAM" setting. What RAM you running and multipliers etc? Shame I cant go further, since I have an arctic freezer pro.

Yeah I have a P5QL Pro and my RAM doesn't like going over DDR2-845 speed, so I'm stuck at 3.8ghz with my E8400. Not a bad overclocking mobo, but definitely not the best.

I'd be happy with 3.8GHz lol! That is decent! Sounds like that mobo is better than my SE.

I started at 3.0ghz, you started at 2.5. My OC is barely any better than yours!

CPU clock at 300, 12.5 multiplier

Vcore 1.29v

memory voltage 2.016v

MCH voltage 1.152v

CPU Dram clock ration 1:1, using Crucial 4GB DDR2 800MHz

Make sure to get a capable CPU cooler. The stock one isn't going to take you far, that's for sure :P

I second this. The stock cooler for the Core 2 Duos is horrible. I got an arctic cooling freezer 7 pro and it does the job for my moderate OC @ 1.24V.

I have a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7, it runs cooler with that at 3.75 than the stock did at 2.5!!!!

Crunching/gaming and i don't plan on overhauling for a while, maybe when 6 or 8 cores are out for a decent price.

Ok now that makes much more sense. So at least you had a option to set the CPU Dram clock ratio to 1:1 - thats the exact feature I want. Would allow me to overclock up to 4GHz potentially. I swear it says on my mobo box that I can do 1:1 ratio. I'm gonna go in my loft and check..
