Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my old system and was wondering if a 4870 would work on anATHLON II X2.

Thanks.

It won't be a big bottleneck. A little overclocking would eliminate any bottlenecking completely.. save for the games that really like quad-core CPUs.

a 4870 won't bottleneck an that athlon. It might end up that other way around.

it wont bottleneck it but according to benchmarks you would get alot more frames if you're cpu was an i7.

Hell from what I have seen even I would get like 50 frames more with a 980x in games. Case in point though an Athlon II wont be bothered at al by that CPU. While you would notice more frames with a quad core, especially with newer games.

Thanks for the help guys. The reason I'm interested in the 4870 for my old PC is that I already have one in my current computer.

I was considering crossfiring them when the old system isn't being used. How complicated a process is that and is it something that can be done on the fly? ie, play a bit of lan between the two systems, finish, take the 4870 out, put it in the current system, hey presto and vice versa.

Again, appreciate your help.

Up to you really. While I didnt do this for SLI I did this for some of my LAN parties and my spare computer that my father uses. For some reason he hated having the 8400gs in there that it did so I would have to put it in and take it out every time I wanted to use it. Only takes a few seconds of installation. Of course there is a high chance of damaging the card, but if youre careful you should be fine
