I've been itching to play another good rpg. A few years back I bought arx fatalis and it became one of my favorite games. I decided to play it again but it doesn't work properly on this new computer.

So, I need a new game. The games that are listed as similar to arx fatalis, aren't really. I've played morrowind but I need something with a little more structure and less openened-ness. I tend to get overwhelmed in such a free for all environment. I want something that will take quite a few hours out of my life.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks :)

To the above posters: If he says he wants something like Arx Fatalis, then he probably wants something like Arx Fatalis! Back on topic: System Shock 2 and Deus Ex were vaguely like Arx Fatalis, being first person RPG/Shooter hybrids (and they're also great games). The Thief games have a similar feeling to Arx Fatalis, but they aren't RPGs - they're some of the best stealth games ever made. If you don't mind old-school games (like, pre-Wolfenstein 3D), the Ultima Underworlds were damn good first person RPGs. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic had great combat, and reminded me of Arx Fatalis, but was very mediocre. I should probably also recommend the Gothic games, which aren't first person, but are similar to Arx Fatalis in terms of gameplay mechanics. *Edit* Well, at least one of my suggestions was accurate - apparently Arx Fatalis was originally going to be called Ultima Underworld 3, but the developers couldn't get the license for the series. Oh, and Arkane Studios apparently were heavily influenced by Looking Glass Studios' other games, so Thief and System Shock (and Deus Ex, kinda) would be good choices. ....and Dark Messiah reminded me of Arx Fatalis because it was made by the same people! :P

Wow, thanks for all of the help- fast too!

Lots of games to look into :) They actually all look pretty good so far, I think it's going to be diffcult picking.

From What I gather you like First person Perspective Games, with this i can only recommend Oblivion. But if you like 3rd Person RPG then i can help, Diablo 2 LOD is a great RPG a bit dated but still good, icewind dale 2 is also good, although its gameplay is slower, titan quest is ok, dungeon siege 2 is ok if your computer can handle it.

A third-person, vaguely turn-based (actions are turn-based, but shown in realtime, if you know what I mean), party-based futuristic RPG is very similar to a first-person, real time, sword'n'sorcery RPG?
I don't really see the connection. :(

At least my suggestions worked, because they were games that Arx Fatalis was based on, or games made by the same developers. ;)

I've played Diablo 2 and enjoyed it. There was too much fighting, though. And I couldn't seem to really get into it.

How similar are Morrowind and Oblivion?

How similar are Morrowind and Oblivion?Haylsinator

Well since they're made by the same dev and take place on the same continent, quite similar. But, they both take place in different regions so they have their differerences.I'd go with Oblivion since it's just a nice improvement from Morrowind. That being said, playing Morrowind afterwards wouldn't be out of the question.

Well, I have morrowind and it's enjoyable, just too big. I feel like I'm forgetting something every time I play. I guess I'm just not creative enough for it :)

The great thing about that, and one of the things that i really liked in Oblivion is that travelling is vastly improved. You don't have to grab a strider to get where you want to go anymore, you can either explore the environment by riding on a horse, or, you can quick warp to where you want to go, which is very useful for a lot of quests. It makes the problem of not exactly knowing where that cave or those ruins were, much easier on the whole.

From What I gather you like First person Perspective Games, with this i can only recommend Oblivion.

Corrupt_Tiki

Oblivion could actually be a good suggestion, in this case. The TC said that he disliked Morrowind for being aimless and generally non-linear - Oblivion was basically an over-simplified and suprisingly linear version of Morrowind, so it could work.
Personally, I found the game to be an insult to the RPG genre, but to each his own.

I'm fortunate in the fact that I tend to be very blind when it comes to whether a game is "good" or not. I'm sure I've played plenty pieces of trash and thought they were fantastic. That gothic game is looking pretty sweet. I'll probably end up giving that one a shot- if I can find somewhere to buy it.

Isn't the Oblivion world smaller than the Morrowind world? My friend has both, and I noticed that. Morrowing has tons of towns and a lot of land to go over. But Oblivion doesn't have not nearly as many towns. But, if you want to even TRY Oblivion, you will need an amazingly awesome super mega computer. It is really hard to get it on high, and it probably isn't even safe to run it on high even with the most current stuff. So, if you want Oblivion, make sure your computer can handle it... Seriously...

In some ways, yes - it all depends on what you like.

Both games have slightly crappy combat, although I thought that Gothic's was slightly better because you actually had to think about your attacks/blocks.

The Elder Scrolls games have better item management, character customisation, and larger areas. Gothic was more story-driven, but your actions actually had an effect on the gameworld, unlike in the Elder Scrolls.

The Elder Scrolls games have recently become pathetically easy, while the Gothic games are still very hard.

I don't know much about this computer since it's my boyfriends but as far as I can tell it's pretty damn good. I'll seek out the computer info and minimum requirements for the game and see how well they fit.

yeah that's a good thing to know since Oblivion is a very demanding game, and to really get a true experience from it you need a good system.

While I agree that to get the BEST experience out of oblivion you need a fairly high end computer, i was playing oblivion for a couple of weeks before i upgraded my computer to what it is, and i had a Nvidia 6600 PCIE, 1GB RAM, 3.2ghz processor etc, and while i had to dumb it down, (low to med) i stil got a very compelling experience, as for gothic 3, i have never played it but from what i gather the game engine is quite buggy, also i agree with the comment that fighting in oblivion is boring, its more of an adventure game. Another game you might want to look at could be FABLE the lost chapters, i played the first one, and while i didnt like it because it was too linear for me it might be perfect for you, also the system requirements arent that high.
