i do think all patches should be placed on the developers official website, in addition to the automatic updates available via the client. some devs provide patches using both avenues, some don't.
You can disable the client in-game interface in addition to Offline Mode. They can interfere with the game if you leave them on. A good example is Mass Effect 1. It's normally pegged at 60 fps. But, when a new version of Origin came out, it caused Mass Effect 1 to stutter and the framerates dropping into the teens. The solution was to disable Origin's in-game interface. As soon as I turned it off, Mass Effect 1 went back to 60 fps.

Except for rare cases like this, I think the clients effect on how well the game is running is negligible. Maybe if you got limited CPU resources it will affect more.
