Would I be able to play Crysis/other high-end games on high/max with this setup?

I'm new to computers, or atleast the hardware aspect of them, and out of my laziness I bought a pre-built HP, but I think it's pretty good for the price. ($650)

AMD Phenom Quad 9550 2.2 GHz

5 GB RAM

750GB HDD

I'm going to buy a 8800GT and a new PSU (600W). Would I be able to play Crysis or CoD4 1440x900 on maxed out settings (maybe with some AA? What would be the FPS?)

Also, would I have any trouble fitting the 8800GT into my HP case? The mobo is 24.5cm and I don't want the card to touch the hard drive or something.

You won't come close to maxing out Crysis, depending on your resolution you might be able to get away with a mix of med/high settings, but very high will most definitely bog that computer down.

You will get pretty good performance with call of duty 4, but you won't be able to max that game either.

You should have went with intel. You could have gotten a much better PC for what you spent ($650+8800gt+600w psu). Also, 8800gt is a small card, should fit fine.

I dissagree... every game will run maxed out with 4xAA except crysis. For crysis you'll get 27-33 fps on high settings, DX9, no AA

I can play Cyrsis on high 1680x1050 with nature mod on my 8800gtx with around 27-35fps and it looks freakin amazing. Oh and motion blur off. So iam sure you could with a mixture of high ans medium.

i say you would run everything otu currently perfectly fine apart from crysis and most upcoming games also like left 4 dead, far cry 2, GTA 4 etc best thing to do is overclock your GPU when playing and have your resolution slightly lower a 1024x768 res never looks bad on any screen people talking about 1680x1050 resolutions just want to try get the max but 1024x768 res would look good and provide good performance

1440x900 would be my resolution, I stated that in the first post.

Even if it isn't maxed out, would I be able to play Crysis on all high settings?

At 1440x900 i don't think so, at least not with playable frame rates (over 20), you could try to lower your resolution to 1280x1024 and get about 30fps still with all settings on high.

1280*1024 is actually a slightly higher resolution than 1440*900 ...

because 1024x700 is way lower then 1280x1024 & 1440x900

1,280 x 1,024 = 1,310,720 pixels
1,440 x 900 = 1,296,000 pixels

Not with that phenom... ooh and its prebuilt.

You will be able to max out every game at 1440*900 but put Crysis on high and you'd be lucky to get a solid 25fps average, I'd recommend you do the following:

-Put the water on medium

-Turn off motion blur

-Physics on medium (CPU speed)

Then put on 2x AA and V-SYNC... you should get nothing lower than 35 Average.

Same settings I have mine on with Crysis and I have a weaker GPU and get a solid 28FPS average.

It would be a good idea to wait out for 16 days (20 if you are in the US) and get Warhead instead of Crysis, you'll have better performance for graphics on it, assuming Crytek has improved things as they said they have.

1280x1024 could be the monitors native resolution?

The resolution does have an effect, I was playing GRAW on my PC, on a normal screen at 1280x1024 and I could play at all high at a decent FPS, but when I used a widescreen monitor and left it at the same resolution the game kept stuttering when I was in the multistorey car park so I had to turn down the settings to be able to finish the level :(

You mean that on a non-widescreen the game ran fine at 12x10 but not when on a widescreen using 12x10?:|:|

Sorry bro that's not happening at all.I am sure it would be something like 16x10 you were using with the new monitor.

Seriously, I couldn't complete the level because of the poor performance, yet when I got home and plugged in my normal (CRT) monitor everything was fine and I could push the settings back up, it sounds strange, but it happened.

Yeah, we can't see the 3rd line, probably because I'm on a computer with a resolution of less than 1280x1024 :( (It's not mine)
