I personally don't think so, although Blizzard would still exist either way.

i don't know valve's history,but what is your point?lawlessx
No ID software=no Wolfenstein 3d=no Half-life=no Valve.
Doom spawned a bunch of me-too clones on the PC (Bungie was quietly making its own FPS games on the Mac). Quake was id's next major jump. It was the Crysis of the time because no PC can run it past low-twenty frames per second until 3d-accelerators came out and the GLQuake patch was issued. Once that patch was issued, Quake gaming simply exploded all over the place. It got even better with Quake 2 in early 1998. Then, Valve's Half Life came out later that year.
So, yep. Valve may have not taken off without id.
Edit:
Actually, it was "no PC can run Quake very playable at 640x480 at the time". Quake ran fine at 320x240 under software rendering. But, it was an ugly pixelated mess. GLQuake was pure heaven.
Would buns exist if there were no hotdogs?...f22rfAnd why are are buns sold in packs of six while hotdogs in packs of eight? Look at 3D Realms and where the Duke franchise is currently
Carmack's made it pretty explicit that if it hadn't been Id then it would've been someone else; they just happened to do it first. Valve would exist without Id Software's creation of DOOM and Quake, but Half-Life would not. Why I am bothering to answer this pointless question I do not know.kdawg88But it isn't just engine technology. Newell and Harrington wereconvinced by id employees to start a gaming company.

Your logic is far from right. If not for Carmack, then another intellectual would have developed the code for a 3d environment. And if you don't think Gabe Newell has that ability, then what type of logic are you exactly applying. He leads one of the most successful game development companies in existence, and mostly because of how intelligent he is. If you know math, you win.[QUOTE="f22rf"]Would buns exist if there were no hotdogs?...Night_RydaAnd why are are buns sold in packs of six while hotdogs in packs of eight? I didn't mean it! ... HL 3 has just been postponed for another year... sry guys... 0:)..
If there was no ID software in the past there wouldn't be much games out there today ... we would still be fixated on sidescrolling games like Duke in the past or them Nintendo games and etc.
Reason for saying this is simply becouse if it wasn't for ID there wouldn't be Wolfenstein, followed by Doom, Quake and etc.

It's not exactly rocket science.

Here in the civilized world, California, buns and hotdogs both come in packs of 8.

Why is everyone just assuming that the only person in the world that could ever come up with the concept of the first person shooter is John Carmack?
John Carmac is considered to be the most brilliant game engine programmer at that time (mid-90s). Someone else would have eventually discovered/invented the same technology, but it may have been delayed a few years (probably not more than 5 years delayed). So maybe Valve wouldn't exist, but some other FPS company would spring up when there is money to be made.

To get you to buy an extra thing of buns.. profit thats why.
What's the relevance?
Would the Xbox exist if there were no Intel? Would ID Software exist if there were no Xerox? Would StarCraft exist if there were no Nintendo? There's no way to tell.
ID have had a massive effect on video games, it's impossible to guess at what the industry would have looked like without ID.

Not everywhere though. lol

That's mostly true, especially since the code already existed before Carmack got involved.
I mean, Wolfenstein 3D was inspired by a tech demo for Ultima Underworld, which was far more advanced than anything Id made in its early years (you could jump, look up and down, move at varying speeds, store objects in your inventory, talk to people, write on the map, etc etc).
Id popularised 3D first-person games, but I'm pretty sure someone else would have inspired Half-Life had they not done so.
Of course they would be in business. Wolfenstein 3D wasn't even the first FPS, not by a long shot. The genre was already developing into something real a good time before Wolf3D hit the market; it was simply the most successful, primarily because of id's distribution strategy (shareware) and intense word-of-mouth on college campuses. For a great history of this, read 'Masters of Doom.' It gives you a fantastic history of the id team.
As for Steam/Valve (one and the same these days), that's like saying piracy wouldn't have existed at all. Steam has developed long ago into an attractive DRM for major companies looking to avoid piracy as much as possible. The correct question for this thread would have been either "would the FPS genre exist without id's contributions," in which case the answer is no, OR "would Steam exist without piracy," in which case the answer is also probably no.
Again, someone else would have come up with the same idea.
It's not exactly rocket science.

That is true, yes ... but honestly, if not for ID when would developpers actually come up with an idea that involves an innovation in gaming expirience as overall ? Perhaps a year, maybe 2 later ? Sure, I may have been a bit rough ith the "much games out there today" ... but if you think about it - the inspiration which came with IDs' products back in the days were actually the ones that pushed others to try something new ... and in time they were all slaping themselves while mumbling "The hell didn't I think of this earlier ?"
And the most funny part is that in the end it was a bunch of young fellows who came up with that idea ... the "old-timers" who are supposed to be experts would end up in grandpa diapers by the time they figure out something like that out
