So about a year ago i started playing WoW and i must admit i didn't enjoy it very much as i ended up just running around forests by myself and it just felt like a lame single player game, i didn't have the motivation to grind all the way to a level where i could do some cool raids with other people.

Now with the Cataclysm expansion coming out Blizzard has mentioned that they will be re-designing all the starting areas for all the races. So iam wondering if this will be a good time to try the game again as maybe this will encourage lots of the players to create new characters and the starting areas might be full of life.

What do you think? Does this seem likely?

If you did not like it when you tried it, I dont think you will like it when Cataclysm comes out.

I find it a bit odd you found the game like a "singleplayer" game considering how many people are logged on 24/7. Then again, a year ago everyone was likely at the level cap so starting at one was problably lonely lol

so yea, you might want to give it another go when Cataclysm comes out. The whole appeal of the expansion, at least to me, is the fact that A.) we have a reason to start over again, and B.) most areas are getting a redesign

Perhaps. one of my biggest gripes with mmos is that starting new characters can be a very lonely experience, unless you have an extremely active guild (even then, you won't encounter the other faction). time will tell really, since i've never heard of any major mmo that completely redesigned the starting areas and way up to 60/80 of the level cap. i like starting new characters but i was always put off because of the lonely experience. if i were playing, i would certainly create new characters.

now that i think about it, you may have been on a low population server, are you sure that is not the case?

The problem with Todays MMO's are that they are too easy IMO. there is too much content that allows you to solo to the level cap so 80% of the people that play do it that way. They are major design flaws, the point of this genre is to promote grouping and co-op with other players. I think the new dungeon and raid system has finally brought that to a game like WoW where you can now just join a dungeon run in literally minutes, its actually making me want to go back to it for awhile now that SWTOR wont be around until 2011

Dungeon Running with a party is 10x better than soloing, now that its there and fast, thats just fun gameplay imo.

Dont get me wrong, i got the feeling that if i was rolling with some G's then it would have been great fun, but just being alone for 20hr's killing 10 bears, then 5 giant spiders, then collecting 30 ore's got boring.

yea I can understand that. I went back to make level 1 characters after getting to a high level and its pretty lonely out there. If you do encounter anyone, theyre generally too busy grinding and rushing to level 80 to make time to actually enjoy the game lol.

Your complaints are completely legitimate, WoW is tough to get into for new players. Part of me thinks they should have an auto level option that starts you at level 55, like what they did with the Death Knight class.

LOL, then i would just feel like a jerk missing all the start of the game :D Well hopefully Cataclysm will get a fresh batch of people creating new characters.

Now might not actually be a bad time eighter to be honost. as much as im not a WoW fan, but an MMO lover, Now that SWTOR has been officially announced as a Spring 2011 release you probably have a decent flux of people going back to WoW or people buying it now to pass the time.

well with the new Dungeon Finder that groups people from all the realms it's a lot easier to do the earlier instances and any other instance for that matter. If you are a tank or healer you wont wait more than 5 min to get to a dungeon. so once you reach lv 15 queue up for the dungeon finder in the meantime you can do some quests or level a proffesion, or sit there idle in a major capital city like most people lol

definetly a good start , cataclysm rewamps whole azeroth , new quests , new mobs , new looks :)

anyway its good to start now ,
dungeon finder is just amazing , if you roll tank or healer spec its 1 sec queue and if u roll dps its 1-5 min :) but you can do some quests while you wait , also if you roll at new-player realm , there is a lot low lvl. players , easy to find friends to level and for group quests also ...

anyway wow is getting better and better game in time , so if you had problems some time in the past , i believe now it is gone ^^

I think that if you want to start playing WoW, you might want to wait until Cataclysm comes up and then roll one of the new characters. You'll be able to level with other people, instead of now where everyone is getting the 20% exp bonus just to get characters. But once you hit around level 20, you'll probably see more people around and the other faction as well.

Yes, and up until level 80 or so you will pobably find a group in around 10 minutes or less using it. It will also give you the option to teleport to the dungeon and then back to where you were before. Once you hit 80 you will probably get into a group within 1 or 2 minutes.

Does Wraith of the Litch king add much to WoW? Would I be missing much by starting a new game without it? Also do I get a free month when purchasing WotLK?

WotLK adds a huuuuuuuuuuge amount of content to the game.

Not to mention the Death Knight class (you need a level 55 character to unlock the death knight)

And no, if you are a new player there is no need to get either of the expansions until the appropriate level.

regular WoW is levels 1-60

Burning Crusade is levels 58-70

Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) is 68-80, and the death knight, which is accessible at level 55.

So iam wondering if this will be a good time to try the game again as maybe this will encourage lots of the players to create new characters and the starting areas might be full of life.

What do you think? Does this seem likely?

Daytona_178

No. People who start new characters rush through the starting areas as fast as possible to get to the end game content. Probably there will be some life for a day or two but most of the people will be gone from that areas way faster than completely new players. I think it's far too late to start with WoW now.

this is true, but they made leveling easy enough that the casual people (and believe me, the bulk of WoW players are indeed casual gamers who dont spend 8 hours farming) so that they can actually keep decent pace with people more intent on reaching end game.

And either way, this new expansion is going to bring hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of old and new WoW players so there will be a great number of people wanting to take their time.

You probably joined an empty server; try either looking for a highly populated recommended/new server with a sh*t load of lowbies or join Mal'ganis horde (PVP). Probably the largest population for one faction ever. I used the population tracking mod one weekend at primetime; the alliance had 400 people on and the horde had nearly 7000 players lmao.

If you don't care for leveling up your toon and just want to get to the level cap as fast as possible you can try this guide:

http://www.wow-pro.com/leveling_guides/james_horde_leveling_guide

I leveled up a toon in no time playing a couple of hours a week. Guide worked really well for me since I started the game late and there was no one to play with at lower levels. Leveled up quickly and found a guild to get the good loot. Got tired of it though and gave it up around a yearago.

Its not too late to start with WoW that's completely false. If you want to start playing the game now i would suggest to pick a high populated server then level up to 15 and then start using the dungeon finder. And like i said before healers and tanks will find a group in less than 5 minutes, dps takes a bit longer from 5 - 20 minutes depending on time or day, from my experience. In the down time you can quest in an appropiate zone for your level, or level a profession and make some gold on your way 80. Another reason i would encourage people to start wow now is so you can get to see azeroth as it is now because once cataclysm comes you wont be able to experience this content as it is now. Or if you wish you can wait til the expansion comes, am sure there will be plenty of people leveling the two new classes in cataclysm(worgen and goblin)

Well now they have cross server Dungeons, so you can level just by doing Dungeons if you don't wanna play alone. I do a bit of both and especially at level 70-80 the Dungeon Finder Tool is really awesome!

The game has gotten progressively worse since about 1 1/2 years into BC so Id say avoid It. I figure it will hit a new low with Cataclysm, heres hoping Old Republic is good.

Nah 40man raid was the best, then WOLK came and It had cool script bosses and made it lot's of fun. I think you should get it and make a boomkin with a friend
