I'm going to be starting WoW soon (I know, I'm way behind xD), and I wanted to get your opinions on some character builds. I'm planning on being a mage, and there are two builds that I was looking at doing. One is almost a pure Frost build, while the other is a Frost/Arcane hybrid. Feel free to provide constructive criticism on either build, or to provide suggestions for swapping certain talents for others ^_^

Mage Build 1

Mage Build 2

For leveling, neither. Go all fire until you get to level 70. Once you hit level 70, frost is best. There is a Frostbolt-Ice Lance combo that can do up to 8k damage if you get it right. No Fire ability can compare. So yeah, Fire-Leveling Frost-70

It depends on guilds, and what you will do.

I believe(its been a long time since I played wow) that Fire build is usually the end game raiding build, and frost is PVP, usually mix up Arcane with either build you decide.

I'm a Paladin expert(alliance) so, if you need help on that, give me a holler.

Then why bother asking? You're obviously an expert player and shouldn't be asking for advice on here.

If you have some buddies you are playing with that want to level a healer/healers with you, you could always go arcane and just AOE everything in sight.

Fire is the best for leveling, as you can get some nice dps spells. Frost is better for pvp, as it gives you more survivability. I recommend reading the mage class forum on the main WoW site, as you can find some useful information there.

This is probably a good build for leveling.

Just go to Wowwiki.com and they will show you what is best for leveling. The most common build for leveling is indeed a frost mage for two major reasons.

1. Frost yields more damage per mana point than fire does. While fire is better for BURST damage and thus the prime choice for PVP/Raiding. But frost is more mana efficient.

2. Frost Nova and Ice Barrier are two examples of the frost mage's greatest assets. Survivability. When you are soloing, you will need the ability to protect yourself while casting. Trying to shoot a high powered fireball at one of three mobs is very difficult when he's pounding you to dust.

So while I personally favor Fire and Arcane for the explosion, I must say that the best solo leveling build is a pure Frost Mage.

At low levels a fire mage can do more damage but has to drink alot more. Also if you're a NEW player you may not be an expert at surviving with your mage in the cruel world of warcraft. As a frost mage, you will gain more survivability with increased slowing spells and stuff like that. But here's the real trick to leveling up your mage the right spec. At low levels, spend points on things you can take advantage of right away, dont plan ahead with your talents. At level 40 or somewhere around there, just change your talents for the first time, it'll only cost you 1g. Here's a good example in case you're a bit confused: If you want to become an Arcane/Fire mage with 40 points into Arcane and 21 points into Fire, you DONT level up that way because all the good stuff is in the level 30-40s. You'll just be leveling up slowly because you've got useless abilities that you do not need right now for leveling. Just spend points on whatever will benefit you NOW, when you're at high levels THEN you can switch to whatever build you want like 40Arcane/21Fire.

if your planning to go on raids warlocks and shamans are your best best, not many peole use mages as dps anymore

now for builds

Fire is the easiest to lvl

PVP varies in what arena team you going into and what classes are in your team, i see a lotta frost mages in 5v5

Sounds good to me...I was afraid cause the site makes it sounds like it's really expensive to switch your points xD

The first time you switch points it only costs you 1g, next time its 5g, then 10,15,20 and so on. Each time the cost is increased by 5, up to a total cost of 50g. HOWEVER......if you dont switch your talent points every month the price can drop down again :) Good luck in World of Warcraft man, i've played as a human mage for nearly 3 years and i warn you it can get extremely difficult to win PvP matches with this class now, but no matter how crappy this class gets, it will ALWAYS be the most fun to play (in my opinion of course). I'd rather be the fun wacky and annoying mage that gets killed in 10 seconds than be the overpowered class that only requires 1-2 buttons to kill people. Booooooooooring....

I heard Orc hunters are better but dude just pick which ever you think looks coolest. I made the mistake of picking a HUMAN mage rather than an UNDEAD mage which I thought looked better. I always drank Noggenfogger every 10 minutes to transform myself into an undead because I hated the way I looked. I went broke a couple of times on buying those drinks.
