http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/175306/World_of_Warcraft_loses_1_million_subscribers_in_three_months.php

As part of the publisher's quarterly earnings report, Activision Blizzard revealed that World of Warcraft had 9.1 million subscribers as of June 30, 2011. That's an impressive figure, to be sure, but it's soured a bit by the fact that the game boasted as many as 10.2 million subscribers in March.

Looks like they aren't doing too well. Just like we guessed, the Annual Pass was only temporarily able to tide the losses. Any predictions on how low it will go?

With a expanision coming in a little under 2 months I doubt it will get much lower any time soon.

To be honest, it's not a relatively huge loss. It would be interesting to see subscriptions after Mists of PandaLand comes out

To put it into perspective...WoW makes more money in a single month than most MMO's will make in an entire year.

I can predict how high it will go, probably after MoP is released numbers will scale up above 11 million, just like it was with every WoW expansion. Please don't worry, WoW will still be a king of all MMOs for the next couple of years.

Hehe, 9.1 million is not doing well? What's the fascination of people wanting to see this game fail? (Not a WoW player btw)

Why do people think MoP will raise the subs that high? Cata couldn't, so why willl MoP be any different?

And this never happened in TBC and WotLK, how are people coming up with this stuff??

WoW had their highest sub count of all time during cata, 12 million. So please educate yourself and get the f*ck out of this fourm.

I expect a slight uptick when MOP comes out and after that it will continue to lose subscribers. The game isnt half as good as it was during it's heyday (BC before the nerfs started to get ridiculous to appease the morons)

It may be losing and may never get that 12 millions subs back again but this is just a trend. Alot of people cancel subs near the end of an expansion and wait to renew when the next one comes. Guild Wars 2 will definetly have a factor in the sub drops but they'll definetly rise again soon enough.

This, all other MMO's dream of doing this badly :P Still given it's age I'd imagine that we'll see a continued, gradual drop in WoW subs.

I enjoy a challenge when playing a videogame. It's not like Vanilla/BC WoW was even that hard. It was just slightly less easy. You turn the game on now and you are basically given free epics. Blizzard has trivialized WoW and it's content because of how easy they have made it. I thought it was ridiculous when Sunwell Plateau basically got turned into a theme park ride where you just walked in and collected loot.

You arent given free epics. You have to do dungeons and raids to get them. Cata dungeons are actually pretty challenging, more so than WOLTK. It certainly is a step in the right direction. Getting gear is not as easy as you are making it out to be. It takes time and effort.

Vanilla/BC WoW wasnt harder, it just took more time. Thats all it has over WOLTK and Cata. It was a massive grind fest. I played the game at launch. I played a Pally, which at the time bored me to tears.

If you think WOW raids are challenging I shudder to think what you'd think of a RTS/MOBA.

Have you cleared every single WoW raid on heroic difficuility and gotten every single raid achievement? Neither have I. And I said dungeons, and I also said PRETTY challenging. Comparing a MMORPG to a RTS makes no sense whatsoever. It just makes you look like a fool.

Stop being a moron, patch 4.0 that initiated Cataclysm in WotLK right before Cataclysm as an expansion got released is what set that record.

Regard your last post, yes, only a moron would find praise in posts when there isn't just to make idotic, pathetic rants about how people are fanboys, yes my avatar is an elf, it's by a 2D artist from the WoW community, it's in no way, shape or form related to Blizzard itself, I don't praise Blizzard when it's about games I don't play anymore, but I absolutely despise idiots like you and idiots that praise the game like it's God, that's simply retarded to hate it like some mentally diseased animal or to love it love a clueless husk.

It deserves praise because it's the most successful game in the history of gaming and the best MMO there is, but not like trolls do around here.

Oh dear I feel sorry for anyone who played the pala during Vanilla, including myself :(

30s seals, which were consumed by Judgement, drained all mana in seconds. No taunt, almost no dps spells (Judgement, Hammer or Wrath and ?), just painful auto attack. Couldn't be either DPS or Tank, just a healer, and a weak one at that :|

And yes the game was grindy, but it was a huge, epic game; adventureos, full of mystery, secrets and challenging quests (I will never forget the Verigan's fist questline for my pala, as well as the lock mount questline). Something today's WoW lacks. The feeling of adventure is gone forever.

One more thing today's WoW lacks is server community. Cross realm features kinda destoyed it.

Update:During a Gamasutra-attended investor conference call, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime pointed out that most of the players who dropped out ofWorld of Warcraftthis quarter were from Eastern territories. He added that he believes a number of players are "taking a break" fromWorld of Warcraftto play the recently-launchedDiablo III.]

Also, Diablo 3 has sold more than 10-million.

The game could drop 6 million paying subs and still be making money and be larger than any other pay to play game.

What's the damn fasination with MMOs failing anyway?

And what's the point of pointing out the loss of subs in the game when MOP is coming out in a couple months? Here is how it's going to go....some people are taking a break and waiting for the xp pack, some are going to resub now. Either way MOP is going to do really well and subs will go back up.

Do you honestly think Ruby Sanctum is the reason people subbed for WoW? Are you that stupid? "Yeah lets subscribe to this awesome MMO to experience a bunch of content that won't be around in a few weeks, yay!"

I just can't see it going back up to 12 million, let alone 15 million. I do think MoP will be better than Cataclysm was, but too many people got bored in Cataclsym and won't come back. I could see it going back up to 10 million and hovering around there for 6 months before subscriptions go down again. I will probably play a year down the line for a few months when Blizzard does their Thanksgiving/Christmas 50% off sale.

The decline is partly due to the recent migration of Asian WoW players to Diablo 3.

Has there ever even been another MMO that topped the 2m sub mark and stayed there for a time being? Cause WoW has topped that several times over and stayed there for a while. So even now it still is the reigning king of MMO subs and overall amount of content. And still will be for a long time.
