Apparently in the last six months the number of players has dropped 10%

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-08-world-of-warcraft-loses-1-1-million-subscribers

I haven't played a lot of MMO's myself.

I don't think they are particularly healthy because of how conditional they are. People are playing for ridiculously long hours of the day because they feelthey have to get their monthly dollars out of it.

To me, thats not what gaming should be about.

It is bound to happen. Cata right now is considered the worst WoW expansion since, well, you have done the same thing since Vanilla and as far as I know the social aspect is dying each day. Suppose the subscription numbers will increase with patch 4.3 and then fall again until the release of Pandaria.

I stopped playing after WotLK. I'd been playing on and off since Vanilla WoW, so I just got really sick of it. I was in a top tier raiding guild, so raiding 3 nights a week stopped being fun and turned into a chore pretty quickly! I'm guessing other people are starting to get sick of WoW as well.

It will probably just slowly decline over the next few years till it is a shadow of its former self.

I found the zones to lvl in with CATA were awesome, and perhaps just as good or better than anything previous, BUT... i found that once you hit 85, dungeons were just to frustrating. And not much other than that to do with your time.. I found myself logging on, standing around bored and then logging off.. Making gold had become to easy.. i had so much of it, i didnt have any reason to go gather more.. which is something i used to get alot of enjoyment out of.. i used to love mining to make ends meet when i was a noob..

Cata is really scarce on high level content. It may have had the best questing and NPC component, but it is the high-level addiction that keep people going.

It's amazing how this is news though. I mean it's one of the easiest predictions in gaming. Every game declines after a while. It's done exceptionally well and Blizzard are probably very pleased with it. It's raised the bar for MMOs, which is a good thing. Now perhaps developers will try and put out quality games that get frequently updated and maintained by a good team of support staff.

I don't think thats reason. It's because of the way they keep you addicted. If don't keep up to date you fall behind, so the more you keep playing the more you are rewarded and up to date.

To an extent. They did make changes to the game after a few years to allow people who can't play as often to still have the ability to aquire decent things. Then they added arena too which introduced skill vs grinding (to an extent).

It's actually 800,000 subscribers lost from the last conference call.

March Conference Call - 600,000 lost

August Conference Call - 300,000 more lost

November Conference Call - 800,000 more lost

Total: 1.7 million subscribers lost since Cataclysm release

The subscribers seem to be up and down. The lower lost number in August my guess is because patch 4.2 came out around that time. A small group of potential "quitters" decided to stick around after those content patches. But the quadruple-whammy of a long wait for patch 4.3, the disappointing Panda expansion, TOR's soon release, and Diablo 3 as well caused an even bigger loss. I wouldn't be surprised if they start losing 1 million every 3 months until the next expansion.

Well the game has been out for 7 years now! That's a long time I mean usually a new game doesn't last that long with popularity in its multiplayer after few months. People should be surprised that this game lasted this long instead of how the game lost a million subs.

How has it not raised the bar? All MMOs that have came out since WoW's release have paled in comparison.

I've played many and I'd have to say WoW is far from the top of my list. And this is coming from someone who has had multiple level 80's. WoW is just a streamlined take on the game Everquest. All MMO's that have come out since WoW are just trying to clone WoW (to make $$$), so obviously they pale in comparison. I'm still awaiting for a new Ultima Online game, or at least a game inspired by it.

I totally agree i started playing last August and quit earlier this year. Whilst i was able to find fun of my own, the main portion of the game does feel like a chore (as state earlier)

diminishing returns is at work here, seriously, nothing stays fresh forever, no matter how many attempts at re-invigorating you try.

i've been on and off for a while now, and in a few days, my sub will be running out for good hopefully, MoP seriously looks like its trying something new, but I feel it's going to fail because of it. Blizzard is never good at implementing new mechanics in WoW.

Well its a good thing Blizzard has Diablo 3 and another MMO in the works. Blizzard is well overdue for something really different. Frankly, Im surprised more people didn't get burned out earlier. Whether this is the beginning of the downfall or just a decline for the time being. Its time Blizzard does something new.

I was one of those WoW players. I only subscribed during the summer when I didn't have ****s and had a ton of spare time. Game can be pretty fun, but man, it's such a time sink.

Depends how you play it, I used to only log onto get the achievements and raid and was at the time in one of the highest rank guilds on my server also getting a server 2nd. You dont have to play stupid hours to get good at the game though of course it can help.

Eh, I can see how people would say that, I started playing around the launch of the Burning Crusade. Out of the three expansions I played WotLK was definitely my least favourite. Cataclysm felt/seemed like a nice improvement over WotLK to me, but the game finally got boring after 4 ish years and I quit in May.

And it'll probably garner a few hundred thousand more when Pandera Expansion comes out. Eventually, they will lose more when Titan comes out but it will still do better than most MMO's and remain the industry's biggest. It's funny how people like to post news like this like it's something new. The subscriber numbers always fluctuates. WoW is too big to go down or the mere fanboy thought of seeing it fail isn't going to happen. At least not anytime soon..

This is why Blizzard has resorted to gimmicks to keep their subscriber base intact. They are hoping by giving you a free copy of Diablo 3 and a new sparkle pony that you won't go out and buy ToR.

I bought into it. A free copy of D3 and some free stuff in WoW is more than worth the year commitment.

I think it's great for players that already had their mind made up that they will stick with WOW for a while or at least for a year or two. For those subscribers, it's a great deal. Some developers/companies don't even offer anything worthwhile.

Still the most played subcription mmo. Game was bound to decline at some point people can only play the same game for so long even with new content. WoW has plenty of life left but there will trying something different with Titan to caputure a new audience and not have it feel like a wow reskin really hope it is a fps mmo.

Typical news reporting fail. Most places in the Far East don't subscribe to WoW- they just buy time cards. But hey, who needs accurate reporting?

Hopefully Blizzard will soon be ready to show off Titan and get it launched before WoW completely loses all of its steam.

I don't think it's surprising that WoW is starting to steadily decline after 7 years. More surprising that it managed to keep growing for 6 years, I'd say.

I quit when Rift came out, and then sold my Rift acct with a decked out Hammerknell geared mage (top 10 world guild) and used the cash to pre-order SWTOR, D3, Skyrim, BF3, and Batman AC. I dont think were sick of MMO's, just WOW, Bring on Star Wars and Guild Wars!

Stopped playing, went to other games (not MMOs, because nothing is good for WoW fans, nothing that is released at least).

it is seven years old, folks. It is going to continue losing subscribers until a certain point, but at that time Blizzard will have Diablo 3 and even Titan out.

WoW is going to remain a viable game for decades, though, especially with a company like Blizzard supporting it. Wait and see.
