Like they say, FFXI is not for casual gamers, so if you dont have much time in your schedule for games then get WoW, but FFXI is so much deeper than WoW in terms of classes, strategy, and clanship. In FFXI you will spend more time to get things done, but get a deeper sense of achivement out of it. WoW starts to run thin for people because it is so easy for many people to reach the cap and do end game activites, while in FFXI there are so many end game activites that are hard for even the most experienced group of veteran players.
i played ffxi for 3 years or so. i had to quit to to time constraints as ffxi takes A LOT of time. what really sucks though is they delete your character after 3 months of not playing. so all my hard work is gone, which is lame.
Â
i would say go with WoW, it's more fun.

I quit and came back like 5-6 months later and they never deleted my char.

WoW raiding is NOT easy. You must not have done any.Â

After you cancel a content ID in FFXI you have a year or something around there to reactivate it and come back before Square deletes your characters.
Which is better? Well that depends what you are looking for and who you have to play with. If you just want a mindlessly fun game that you can solo in go with WOW. If you have friends or a group of people that you can regularly play with and want a game with layers upon layers of depth and that has a soul go with FFXI. However, if you can't regularly devote 3 hours to the game each night or couple of nights don't bother with it. FFXI is NOT for casuals or the feint of heart. They have made the game better though by introducing items available at any level that increase your xp gained from killing stuff for a time and so on. They also let you choose your server now when making your character.Â

Compared to FFXI raiding in WoW is easy.I spend more time getting past missions in FFXI then raids in WoW,also the fact some raids in FFXI took linkshells almost afew years to beat dynimis.
FFXI deletes your entire account after 3 months of inactivity, its not worth it.IZoMBiEI
They say they do but in most cases they don't i know people that quit for a year and come back and have the character still. But it is great that you can quit WoW come back anytime you want.I though FFXI was a better game myself but takes too much time which is why i play WoW now.If Square had put more solo content in FFXI i would still be playing it.
There should be free trials of both.
But out of the two, i'd pick WoW. FFXI felt more like work than an actual game.Â

Afaik there aren't any free trials of FFXI BUT you can buy it for peanuts and run out the first month...
WoW is very pretty and easy plus there are loads of active players - sometimes casuing queues for servers. FFXI is dated and hard but has a lot of rewards for achieving various mission / quest lines. There are still loads of active players.
Both are good games in their own ways.
