Guys I am wanting to get into a mmo and was wondering if I either get back into WoW at this point or wait a couple of months for SWTOR? I am currently playing the ftp version of WoW and at level 20 will have to make a decision as to whether I pony up for the full upgrade. I am not into spending hours upon hours running large instances and things like that. I play MMO's just for fun and at my pace. That is not to say that I wouldnt join a guild, but these types of games will not dictate my life.

SW: TOR definitely, WoW will just bore you to tears with the lazy quests which clearly try to spoof TV shows or movies and it ruins the experience of WoW considerably.

Aren't they pretty much the same game anyway? :P

I recommend WoW for the simple reason that you should never buy MMORPG games on day one. Ever.

Give it a month or two to see if the game is worth playing. It also gives the devs time to hash out all the release bugs, because there will be a lot of them.

So by your logic, you're telling everyone to not support a game from day one, which could essentially actually cripple it and make it much harder on the game if everyone was to actually listen to you?

And no, they're not the same game just because they both play similarly. Different universe, different stories, one's sci-fi, another is fantasy. I'd have expected that to be obvious, but apparently not.

I played wow on and off for the past years, a little after it's launch. The game had it's ups and downs, but right now, the game is far in it's lows. More so now than it ever has been. Much of it's content get's rehashed and is very stale right now. Though, if you're brand new to it, it can be very fun at first and is definitely recommended. I don't play anymore myself, as mentioned to the things I said above. Only friends kept me around, and that wasn't enough to keep me from being bored to tears most of the time. It can definitely play like a second job at times.

If you like solo experiences, TOR is going to have much of that as well. WoW's very limited with it, as I was a solo person for a long time. If you wanted, can play through TOR as a single player game, essentially a KotOR 3.

In the end do you want to tread and catch up to around 7 years of content in wow? Want to begin a brand new experience in SWTOR, where everyone else will beginning anew as well? Are you into fantasy or sci-fi?

WoW, polished and somehow, better looking than SWTOR(god awful art direction imo, and rigid animations). Also, I have my doubts on Bioware's balance or boss fights, if anything, wait a few months, wait for people to calm down from the hype, you don't wanna buy a game that's gonna get deserted or just make it by.

When people use the setting as the main difference between the games that gets me kinda worried to be honest.

This genre is in dire need of new mechanics, not a fresh coat of paint.

I'm getting SWTOR, but I play WoW. I see myself doing what I've done with other MMO's that I've tried: play it for a couple months and then go back to WoW. That's not to say that SWTOR will be a bad game (I'm very excited about the game!), it's just that I've put a lot into WoW and so many people play it that it's hard to move on. And I won't pay two monthly fees. So, I'll choose WoW.

Is SWTOR being balanced around PvP? It's such a stupid idea imo to try to balance something as inherintly "unbalanceable" as an MMO for PvP games. Thank god Blizzard isn't doing this cause all it forces you to do is neuter otherwise awesome pve mechanics. There are simply far too many variables such as classe, team comp, and massively variable gear. If you want balanced pvp, FPS and RTS games are the correct answer.

From what I've seen there are only battlegrounds, no arena. The battlegrounds they haven't said much about other than that they are sort of like minigames. (one of them is some sort of soccer offshoot) If the battlegrounds aren't based on character stats, it should be easy to balance. You are right though. TOR is a PVE game. WoW tried to do both but ultimately has failed. It is still PvE with subpar PvP tacked on. Blizzard even considers Arena to be a mistake, and they have never been able to balance it well enough without screwing up PvE balance.

For the most part, PvP is balanced. As with all MMORPGs, you can never get something 100% balanced. But it's pretty damn close.

I like what Everquest 2 did with PvP and PvE versions of the various skills, made things a lot easier to balance, even though PvP wasnt that great. The ideas behind it were though.

All of them I've never seen an MMO out of Bioware(probably something to do with them not making them), so I don't know how well they're gonna do on making fun bossfights, also, if I were to judge from a previous Bioware game, ME2, I'd say... sure hope they don't just completely suck, good game, not much for boss fights.

If you are looking to get into mmos than avoid ToR like the plague for a few months after launch because so far there has not been an mmo without terrible problems at release (except Rift I suppose that went pretty smoothly).

Oh please, I think you're pushing it a little too far. Let the people who have to have it now pay full price for it, but let those who can stand a few months wait to get it later. Most likely for cheaper and even the opportunity of a free trial. And yes, time and time again it has been proven to avoid first-day purchases like the plague. This is especially true for MMORPG's that are often rushed, buggy, and very unstable at launch.

I'd rather be in the position of saying, "It was totally worth the wait, I can now enjoy a more stable experience," as opposed to saying, "I paid $50 for this?"

Then I suppose you shouldn't play any new MMORPG ever again, EVEN IF the team has people that have worked on previous MMORPGs.

You make boss fights out to be like they're some high-science. Perhaps it's not the games that need to change, but your attitude. Just a thought.

From what I've seen, which was a lot btw, SWTOR is going to have a little bit quicker pace that WoW partially because there are obvious objectives and having cutscenes and voiceovers does make the missions more interesting and involved. Aside from the party system though, looking at just the base mechanics of the games, they both play almost exactly the same. So the question is do you want a fantasy setting or do you want Star Wars?

Wait for GW2 or Tera imo. But since you said you'd like to take it casually, I'd say GW2. SWTOR looks like Star Wars WoW, and WoW is...well, WoW. Instance-based, protected PvE, battleground-based PvP, carebear game is carebear, really. Real men wait for the TRUE sandbox MMO, Archeage, or get by in Lineage 2 private servers untill the whole Tera Open PvP ordeal is settled.

New MMO's lately have had fairly clean releases. Nothing like what WoW had when it released. I don't think nasty release bugs is something you have to worry about as much anymore. Code has been done before so developers know how to avoid the problems better. That doesn't mean that there will be zero bugs, but not anything that will be game-changing I don't think.

Im just saying that mmos have problems that an mmo player will find normal while people new to the genre may find a complete deal braker.

And do you actually think TOR has/is going to have any of these problems? It's not rushed, nor is it plagued with bugs. Bioware has also taken measures to ensure that the launch is smooth and stable. I do see where you're coming from, though, no need to be so down on everything. Of course, when the game launches we'll all see. I wouldn't mind eating my words, as i'm no rabid fanboy to the game. It's just very sad seeing how negative/pessimistic a vast majority of this community is.

ToR. Azeroth is boring. The world of WoW is just stale, and not exciting. I need something new. It's gotten so boring for me I'm ready to weather the storm of a NEW MMORPG at release and suffer through the bugs. Because it's new. Everquest was like this for me when WoW came out.
