I fired up TW3 today after a long hiatus - work, personal life, and a bunch of new games pulled me a way for a bit.

The latest patch has done a lot for the game. Everything is so much more organized; I like the shields and color coding to help categorize quests, items, etc. It has better options for interacting with the map. It also seems a bit more optimized... or my drivers are better. My 970 always did well with the game, but I had some issues on Ultra in towns - everything runs smoothly now and looks great. I even turned on a bit o' hairworks without bringing it to its knees.

If you haven't touched it in a while, I recommend checking it out. A phenomenal game has become even better IMO!

(so pretty, such lovely music - a really lovingly crafted game)

Patch 1.21 did all the changes you see. Patch 1.22, as far as I can tell, made the game waaay more unstable, performance wise. Im getting frame drops in the water, hundreds of yards from land. That's why Im reinstalling it to patch 1.21 right now.

Yeah I respect CD Projekt Red a lot for making such drastic changes; a lot of devs would maybe tweak certain things, but these guys did a complete overhaul, especially on the UI in regards to inventory management.

Blood and Wine is a beautiful expansion as well.

I have enjoyed TW3 since launch and it keeps improving over time. I recently played through Hearts of Stone and look forward to playing Blood & Wine at some point.

It's an incredible world they've created, all the better now I've moved to 4K.

Shame I've nearly done all the quests :(

Really? I mean, obviously I missed a few transitions so I don't have the comparison to make, but it seems much better than it was, idk, even 5 months ago with the most current revision. At least on my hardware

I'm amazed how polarizing this game is.

@xantufrog: Interesting. I have a 960 with max hair works max everything and it runs pretty damn perfect. A 970 should be laughing, crank it up man.

For those complaining about controls you can change the scheme from original to a new setting that controls way better and way less floaty. It's in the menu

@robokill: just to clarify, you run TW3 in 1080p with everything in Ultra including Hairworks at 60fps with a 960?

It's a phenomenal game. Did you play TW1 and TW2? You'll be more invested in the characters and it makes the story more interesting if you did.

I usually don't recommend the first 2 games to people because it turns people off from the series (especially the first game). The third game is so much better and refined.

I recommend them but make sure to mention how different they are. I think anyone that likes a story driven RPG will like the first two games. The story is great (more so in the first game) and playing both of them really makes the 3rd game even more amazing story wise. I don't think you can fully enjoy TW3 without playing the first 2 games.

2nd yes, not the 1st. Can't remember if I finished it.

The first one made me not play the second one for a long time.

I agree. I think TW3 would stand up well on its own, but would definitely feel much much more generic without the context of the prior two. Suddenly, the complex political intrigue, romantic histories, etc go from, well, complex and meaningful to "ok... random guy I guess I am supposed to care about with funny name needs help. Apparently I have some history with this chick with a funny name too. Ok. Redanians are... good? Bad? I don't care...."

check out the wircher 3 nexus page. some really awesome mods, especially ones that overhaul combat and allow fast travel from anywhere.

I agree, playing the first two immerses you much more. And TW1 > TW2 (come at me). The atmosphere is so much better and the world feels handcrafted with more passion.

I'd say reading the books is a much better way to get familiar with the world than playing the prior games, especially the first two, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny (indispensable to understand the rest), those are collection of short stories, the novels are good but the last book is shit IMO.

I haven't updated since 1.11. Do I update in increments or do I go straight to the version I want? Would hate for the game to break like what happened last time because of my mods. :(

In my experience, every time I update the game, it screws up the mods. I think you just go straight to the newest, and it will patch it automatically fo ryou.

Seems like it worked. Had to update a few mods. Sticking to 1.21 for now.

Good choice. The Enhancement system, and fast travel anywhere are still not updated to 1.22. Both are essentials imo.

@dwtyoutube: "The Witcher 3" - it's a huge fantasy RPG game with "mature themes"
