OK, so, I cancelled my WoW subscription and uninstalled the game maybe 1.5 years ago. Done with WoW forever. Tonight I get an email notification that my account has been closed because of "exploitative activity," presumably gold selling/buying, etc. I've scoured the email thoroughly and it does NOT look like a phishing scam (ie, phony Euro URLs, bad English, directives to provide my account info and password, credit card info, etc). It's gotta be legit.

I will admit that I bought gold......probably the year WoW launched. And I fully admit what I did was wrong. Shame, shame, shame, on me. Did it once, will never do it again.

But does Blizzard seriously have nothing better to do (other than rake its piles of money into tidy mountains) than to investigate and then close the account of an already-cancelled subscription for something that happened four or five years ago? If they don't, that's kinda scary. Look out, bad guys.

yep, a friend of mine had his account accessed and someone was using it to make gold and sell it to other users. Luckily some of his guild members knew he wasn't going to be one a while and they contacted him. He got the password changed and locked the scammers out. Best of all, he got to keep the gold and other stuff that they made for him.

Interesting. But how? A keylogger doesn't seem to be the culprit since I haven't played in months and month. Some kind of brute-force dictionary attack on the account password? In other words, should I be concerned about a larger security issue?

Do you remember if it was a really simple password or easy security questions? Do you still have access to the email account you used to sign up for wow?

If you haven't logged in for a year and a half, they probably just guessed your password so you might want to change your password for anything else that uses that same username.

Yeah, it wasn't a super-secure password, so that's probably how they got in.

Either you were hacked or it's a phishing scam. Not sure if you've contracted a key logger, I know lot's of really careful people that have gotten their **** stolen.

It could be a fake email as well. I've gotten a few that seemed legit where they used the real Blizzard email address, but the links were actually redirects to fake websites.

Mouseover the links. If it's anything but the actual battle.net domain, it's fake.

Naw, I've tested all the links, they're definitely legit. No biggie, since I'll never play WoW again. Hope they enjoyed my stuff. :-)

All the sites look exactly like the battle.net the only difference might be something hard to notice like battel or blizzrard.

Blizzard doesn't ever contact you for that, like that. It's a phishing scam, do not, under any circumstances click the links.

I delete any and all blizzard e-mails concerning wow UNLESS I am actually expecting one from them.

^^^^ What that guy said.

Blizzard don't have the right to get your Credit card info except when you want to buy something from them. I got alot of that kind of e-mails but I never have a WoW account, so just delete it. If you ever get a e-mail that need your Credit card info then you know its a scam.

Most likely fake i get 5 off those everyday and i dont even play anymore, call them to be sure and change the Email.

I changed the Email, so any mails from blizzard reaching me on the old Email are fake.

Its an easy fail system.

2nd blizzard never sends those mails, if you get banned they will just ban you, then its up to you to ask them what happend.

i once got a 24 hour ban, never got mail aswell for it.

highlighted for truth

Blizz does not ever ever ever send those mails under any circumstances. If they close your account they just do it, then you call them to ask what happened.

Btw, by clicking on the links in your e-mail, you now have a high likelyhood of having installed malware.

wasdie be speaking the truth

you only get thsoe e-mails because someones HAS termi'ed your account and its either bogus and from the thieves themselves.. or its legit and its from blizzard.

if an account is ended unexpectedly they inform you but this is the only reason for it

dont just assume an e-mail is bogus folks ebcause there are a hundred of them out there.

some are legit

No that e-mail is fake. I get those e-mails. I have an authenticator. I have not been banned for illegal activities.

To prove it to yourself that it is a fake e-mail, log into battle.net.

It'll list the status of your account right there, no need to even bother with e-mails.

I tested all the links on a Mac, so not worried about malware. :-) Tried logging into Battle.net with old WoW account info, and can't, so presumably hackers have changed my password. Who knows? Note that the email did NOT ask for personal or CC information. It was just a notification that my account had been closed with links for FAQs. Here are the three URLs referenced in the email: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/antigold.html http://us.blizzard.com/company/legal/index.html http://us.blizzard.com/support/article/exploitfaq They're legit, as far as I can tell from visiting each page.
