Hey everyone. I'm building a new rig and I'm trying to decide between...

Processor

AMD x2 550 BE

AMD x3 720 BE

Graphics Card

4850

4870

There is a $50 difference between both processors and both graphics cards. I know with the x2 550 BE I can possibly unlock it to all 4 cores... same with the x3...

The 4850 I've heard there is like a 5-20% difference depending on the game.

What would you guys do??

i would say x3 720 BE and the 4870 it will be worth it more then the other ones. I have the x3 720 and overclocked it to 3.8 ghz so it runs great

the x3 720 BE is better than the 550 for a slight decrease in clock speed (which can be OCed anyways) you get a full extra core. basically it can compare to quad cores almost. the HD4870 provides a significant increase over the HD4850 which its faster clock speeds and better memory.

that combo is the best. although id wait on the gpu if i were you the dx11 cards are litterally around the corner

The 720 BE is actually better than alot of quad cores, and I wouldnt bother waiting, unless you maybe want to save a bit of money. DX11 cards wont come cheap for awhile.

its not usually better unless you compare it to older last gen quad cores but its enough of a boost to warrent the purchase over a faster dualcore. also you forget with new products comes price drops

Hrmm it seems I'll wait until' DX11 cards are out... then decide what to build. Most probably a 720BE with a DX11 card if they aren't too expensive. Thanks guys.

expect $199-299 possibly pushing $399. a bit longer theyll be midrange cards that will be $100-150 but wait because prices will drop everywhere

You could wait forever and ever for price drops, not much point when you could be playing games today.

That's baloney. Then 720 BE is nowhere near comparable to quads in multi-threaded apps. Get the 550 BE with a nice SB750 or SB710 motherboard and unlock the extra two cores. The likelihood of unlocking the fourth core of the 720 BE has greatly decreased now, as AMD is starting to crack down; however, the 550 almost always unlocks into a nice B50. Then, get the 4850; it's not a lot worse than the 4870, and I preferred my 4850 to my 4870 1GB. The memory seemed more stable, and fluid. Then you can always go Crossfire with the 4850's, and save a lot of watts on top of that.

some apps yes, but this is gamespot and for games the 720 BE is quite nice and overclocks decently. even then, http://www.anandtech.com/bench/default.aspx?p=83&p2=52, I would say it holds its own quite well.

reccomending a 550 over a 720 is a pretty bad move especially since the average user wont be unlocking the cores and that only works on certain mobos anyways. also the extra $20-30 more for the HD4870 is worth it by far. 2 4850s in CF are better.

Hi Using that Anandtech link you can compare the 2 processors.

Looks like they are pretty close. The 550 appears to win mostly.

I would just go with the x3 720 BE and the 4870. I'm not exactly sure how stable the cores are that are disabled but I do know that you need to have a certain motherboard(s) and chipset in order to unlock the cores. so in my opinion I would go with the x3 720 BE (it's the same CPU I have now) and the 4870.

you only need 710 and above SB the motherboards are giga, asus, and even asrock. Benchmarks the 720 does win against the 550BE however, if a 550 becomes a B50 the 955 can barely stand up against it. Also the 550 is actually a disabled quad core regor thats why when unlocked it performs better than a 955 deneb. But since you can save $50 dollars get a 550 and upgrade to 4890 they are only $200 that only $30 more than the his iceq 48701gb.
