At the prices I'm dealing with, I can get a single card for the same price or less. I'm just not sure if the single card would out-perform the SLI setup. What card do you guys recommended to go against 8800GTS 512 SLI? Benchmarks would be greatly appreciated.

Hm, isn't a single 9800GX2 actually two lower clocked G92 cards? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes its somehow, but they tweaked it abit to gain some extra performance.

I think you should be able to get x2 GTS cheaper by good amount than one 9800GX2 so i prefer the first option unless you feel doing Quad-SLI later but its totally uselss except if you are running with very-high resolution (25x16)

You mean you can get any single card in the market or 2xGTS?

I would go with a 9800GX2.It outperforms 2xGTS in crysis "although" I must say I am not aware of the GX2's overclocking abilities.

Not necessarily if he has to get a mobo as well.

GX2's overclock horribly due to their very poor cooling.

in this case i would have to agree with you here, a GX2 will outperform and be more reliable than two 8800GTS's in SLI.

Yes a 9800GX2 and 3870X2 have less complications than traditional SLI or crossfire.

Yes, but a 9600GT SLI setup peforms close to the GX2 at standard resolutions and is nearly a 1/3 of the price. Hard to ignore.

Heres what two 8800GTS 512's can do in SLi

26070 in 3DMark05

16813 in 3DMark06

And the only game that this setup cant run smooth @ Maxed Out is Crysis

Well you can get the 2 8800 GTS cards for $460 (after mail-in rebates) from Tigerdirect. So you'd be saving some money over getting the single GX2.

if you just want to play games and you are not concerned with trivial scores or gaining 5 frame per sec in Crysis you should then get one video card and save on your electricity bill. All you really need is 30fps.

Do you think about electricity bill when buying speakers?:?

And no you dont need just 30FPS.In crysis ya 30 will do but not in many other games.

Errr 1/3 the price???

9600GT SLI will run you $300 and 9800GX2 is going for $530 at newegg.:?

And I wouldnt exactly call 9600GT SLI close to the GX2.When you are talking about these setups, high resolution gaming is the priority.

Speakers consume very little energy. The latest video cards are consuming more and more energy to the point that your PC is consuming so much energy when web surfing. If you have an LCD the max is probably 60 - 75 and a costant 30fps will result in smooth gameplay. The very little gain SLI produces especially when considering the price / performance is imo not worth it.

Hmm no if you have decent speakers and are cranking the volume up then your speakers are consuming as much if not more power than your GPU.

Yesterday I was playing GTA3 and it was just not feeling super smooth especially with some action on screen. Then I found out that I had the frame limiter on at 30FPS and once I turned it off the game felt MUCH better.

And yes I agree SLI has a bad price performance but I wouldnt let some electricity bill get in the way.Just my opinion.:)

Once again, the kind people in the PC Hardware Forum have opened my mind. Would any of this be effected if I planned on playing on a 1080P TV?

FYI, I don't pay for electricity :P

From what I've seen, some tests show the 9800X2 as better and others show 8800 GTS 512 SLI as better, it depends on the game. Most of the time they are so close to each other (less then 5FPS) that you can pretty much say they are equivilent.

The biggest point is whether you already have an SLI board. If you do, you can get 2 8800 GTS(OC EVGA for $420) for considerably less than one GX2(EVGA stock $550) and get almost, if not the same performance. If you don't have a SLI board you may end up spending that extra $130 just getting the board, at that point the one card solution is always the better choice.

Why not just buy a single 8800 GTS 512.. It will run every game maxed out basically, and do very very well with Crysis.. To me it just seems a rip to get SLI system when really its only for one game..

The 8800 GTS 512 MB is slightly better then the 8800 GT 512 MB, but you would be better off with the 9600 GT which is better then the 8800 GTS and costs a fair bit less, about 70 dollars less. Overall the 9000 series are much better cards and even the lower end cards perform better for a cheaper price then the upper end 8000 series cards spec wise.

LOL what the hell are you talking about?

Anyways to the TC if you are going to play in 1080p then you should get either 8800GTS SLI or 9800GX2.A single GTS is good but not good enough for 1080p IMO atleast anyways as I like to have overkill framerates.

And just FYI 9600GT is worse than most 8800 cards except the ones with a memory bottleneck.

the 8800GTS's sli are better cuz they're fully developed product unlike the gx2 which is not and has bugs and the drivers aren't perfect , i'd get the g92 sli, beat gx2 most tests
