Sounds like it will be a good game from what i've been hearing.

I loved X3, the difficulty and learning curve were a bit off the chain though. I actually prefered the trading aspect of it to the combat, I think they did it extremely well. X3 + Bonus Pack + Xtended was epic. I used to love firing up the rapid response scripts and watching the huge battles in the sectors close to pirate alley and Xenon areas. Definitely one of the greatest, if not the greatest space sim ever.

Glad to hear they are streamlining Terran Conflict and adding fleet options. One of my main gripes was how it was very difficult to manage your fleet and empire as you got more and more ships/facts.

There will always be a few things that just aren't feasable like ground missions, internal stations etc but no other current gen/next gen space sim has even come close to touching X3.

X3 had a lot of problems but it was also a vast and in some ways impressive game as well.

So...

I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU!

I am looking at picking up a Space Combat Sim today after work.

I have only played Freelancer which I know is a "watered down" SCS - however I thoroughly enjoyed that game.

So I am trying to decide between "DarkStar One" and "X3: Reunion". I enjoy the space combat aspects of these types of games - but honestly the exploration of the space sectors and the visuals are extremely important to me.

I love sandbox games - however I am also a heavy RPG'er.

So it sounds like X3 would be better for the exploration and depth of Universe aspects and DarkStar One would be better for story line and combat/action.

I have also considered trying to find copies of "X: BTF" and "X2: The Threat" - thinking maybe I should play those before X3 - however since these are primarily snadbox style games I am not sure if there would be any benefit at all for me to go back and play the older games in the series. Like I said earlier I do like a good story though - so usually I try and play through a series just so I know what is happening in the game world.

Since there are 2 SCS's coming out in the next month or two - one of which is "X3: The Terran Conflict" - I am leaning towards playing X3 and getting up to speed with the economics and controls of that universe.

Though there are some features in DarkStar One that do sound appealing.

QUESTION...

So my 2 questions are - for those of you who have played both X3 and DarkStar One...

Which one did you think is better and why?

My other question is - for someone who is a "Story Whore" (and avid RPG'er) - do you think there would be any benefit at all for me to go back and play X and X2 before playing X3?

Thanks Guys!

Well...

I HIGHLY Recommend X3: Terran Conflict for the following reasons...

It's the only game I know where you have an unlimited sandbox mode where you can spend years exploring every nook and cranny of a ton of different sectors, watch the battles and conflicts from around the universe unfold, witness races ally/go to war, observe the universe change with the destruction of sectors or invasions and the destruction of stations and building of new stations.

or you can spend years building a massive Empire with tons of Capital Ships loaded with whatever make up of custom fighters and weapons you want and conquer the Universe Militarily.

or you could Trade and build a massive financial Empire with trading stations, orbital factories, your own trading ship and/or hundreds of your trading ships scurrying around the universe playing the totally A.I. self existent adaptive trading market, buying and selling to make as much money as possible; to further your good/evil ways.

or you could delve into the single player story and have a lot of fun, getting introduced to the various universe; spacecraft and stations, sectors, races, politics, wars/alliances, secrets, and have to fight/trade/bribe/spy/build/race and possibly run like hell.

or you could play as a Mercenary or Pirate or Entrepenur and accept various missions from around the universe.

OR

You could do any of the above at any time...

Not to mention the amazingly beautiful graphics, realistic spacecraft flight behavior and the fact that there are hundreds of differnent spacecraft modeled which are all flyable; from tiny but fast single seat fighters to massive cargo and capital warships.

Sound like a good game yet???? :)

Both are awesoem games.

With that said, it seems Darkstar One is more well suited for you. IT has story, and it has RPG elements...sort of. Its also fairly sandbox-ish as you can fly where you wish, trade, do bounty hunts, and all sort of things outside of the story.

The voiceacting isnt great, but the story is interesting enough to keep you going. The visuals are pretty but not great.

X3 is good, but you seemed to stress space combat and the strength of X3 is the economy game. Combat is fun, but its definately not the best part. The best part of X3 is building a huge economical empire.

Have you played Sins of a Solar Empire? Well, kind of imagine empire building, only nothing is automated and instead of viewing everything from an overhead view you gotta do it from the cockpit of a ship. That barely gives you a rough idea of what to expect.

Darkstar One is immediately gratifying, entertaining, has a better story, and is more arcade.

X3 has a steep (waaaaay steep) learning curve, is very rewarding if youre patient, beautiful, and is more like a real simulation (think Falcon 4.0) than an arcade game.
