1) I played a little of x2 (came with a new video card) and I played X3 : Reunion. I didn't play X2 that much but I did get a little ways into the story of x3. Now I am not saying I didn't play x3 a lot for I did, but the story was always 'something to do later' You shouldn't be too lost as the story itself is pretty self explanitory. Do keep in mind the learning curve is pretty steep compared to most other games out there and it will take some time getting used to menus, commands, orders, and such.
Not sure what you mean about the combat. Combat can either be done with mouse or joystick and can truthfully be pretty aggravating at times but I find it fun none the less. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41860.html
The game is an improvement over x3 but the release (as with all X games) is riddled with bugs. The story line in this one is much easier to follow until I foundnd out I bricked it and if I wanted to continue on with the story you have to do a complete restart at 12 hours into the game. Also a lot of people are complaining of a stuttering issue after they have been playing a career awhile. New game has 60 FPS while an older saved game (in same sector) as 5-10 FPS
If you are dieing to play a new space sim and don't mind being a beta I would say go for it. Otherwise give Egosoft a couple months to work out all the bugs.
