Considering the way the game was made, everything seems very accessable without a joystick, especially considering the simplicity of manuevering in empty space compared to what joysticks were made for.. Flight with drag and gravity and air and etc etc..

But what do you think? Should I try and find some room on my desk somehow between the Fang, largeish keyboard, and mouse to put my big ol' joystick on to help with the space battles? Does it help with navigating all that much? Was it a bad idea to get the steam version? I don't really know much on the mod community for this game

I haven't started playing, but even if I hate it, reading the manual gives me a sense of how huge and deep and how much effort they put into this game. Good quality game, it seems, hopefully I enjoy playing it.. Which I'm pretty sure I will.

You really don't need it, infact I think it would make the game harder. X3 was pretty much made to be used with a mouse.

A true PC gamer would use a logitech joystick! Considering the only _true_ flight sims are PC games! :p

But that, that's what I was thinking. The controls are pretty interesting, and you can see how (if after excessive hours of playing), you could really really really quickly access so much of the huge and complex interface with just a few clicks or combinations of keyboard pressing.. Or you can do it the slow way and navigate through the menus until you figure it out.. I wonder if anyone's played it with one

I play with a joystick. Playing any sort of flight game without one is absurd in my book.

I think it would be too.

Some games are made to be played with joysticks, but X3 isn't one of them. It's an option but not one I'd personally recommend.

The game plays perfectly well without one, and it is probably easier to not use one, as you'll have to frequently click your way through menus while flying.

Oh man, X3. Does anyone still pay this. I thought the game was hopeless.

I mean the concepts was great! The presentation superb! But everything like the controls, interface and manual where just plain awful.

This is one of these games that could be great but screwed up because the development didn't had enough time to polish it up decently.

I say don't waste your time on this but if you like to play it anyway use a joystick. It makes combat maneuvers a lot more easier and makes the game feel even more like a space sim. Also make sure you patch the game. This will make it run much smoother on mid-range PC's and solve some bugs.
