So I used a plug n play cable to connect one of my 360 controllers to my laptop via usb. I have the microsoft xbox 360 accessory software installed and updated, when i plugged in the controller it installed the device drivers without incident but the software nor the controller are indicating that it is connected, when i press the home key it just flashes the 4 leds and nothing else. The game isnt picking it up either. What am i missing?

I am running 64bit vista and yes I got the correct software (for 64bit vista) directly from the ms website.

Are you using the play n charge kit? I'm not sure if you can do that.. for a wireless controller you will need a wireless receiver for your PC, and a wired controller will just plug in and detect on its own. No driver downloads required.

Well I don't have a clue but it sounds like you have tried the logical things. At any rate this will give the topic a bump. One thing I might try is to go into control panel and system. On the left side of the screen it say device manager. Look under the Universal serial bus controllers section and see if it recognizes that anything is plugged in or not. It might say unknown device if it doesn't recognize the controller but knows its pluged in. That might help shorten the list down of possible problems.

Wireless Controller -> You need wireless Reciever

Wired Controller -> Automatically works

That's it, there's no debating it.
