So I've had a Vizio HDMI cable for a number of years now. My roomate let me try his official Microsoft HDMI cable and it seemed to have better quality and a clearer image. Was this just my imagination or do I need to upgrade?

Your old cable probably just isn't version 1.3.... any $5 HDMI cable you get these days will work amazingly as long as it's version 1.3.

Could be this, or your Vizio cable isn't shielded. The Microsoft one is.

You don't need shielding for digital cables. Only for analog like component/composite.

You don't NEED it either way. If you would like to, I don't know, protect your cables, then get it shielded.

Any electronic signal can be victim of interference. I've also had many problems with unshielded cables. No problems what-so-ever with properly shielded ones.

No, HDMI is completely digital; 1's and 0's. It's either ALL there, or it's not. Magnetic or electronic interference isn't a problem whatsoever with all-digital cables.

Any electrical signal including digital is susceptible to EMI or RFI if not properly shielded. Digital signal are more resilient to interference, true, but not completely immune.
