Hopefully this does not come across as a rant, as I wanted to just post about my first experience using the service for anyone else who is thinking about trying it, perhaps find solutions for my and other users' issues, and generate discussion about it.routerlogin

I got a free code for a month of Xbox game pass, and said sure let's try it, I'd love to play Gears 5. To actually redeem the code, I had to navigate to the Microsoft store and download the Xbox beta app. First off, when you search "xbox" on the store, the drop down menu gives a plethora of different related apps, of which the one I actually needed was at the bottom of this list. Why there are so many different xbox apps tied to the same service, I'm not sure! whatsapp web192.168.0.1

I install the app and run it, and I realize the Microsoft account I have linked to my Windows license is linked to a burner Xbox live account that I had created roughly a decade ago as a teenager, most likely so I could smurf in Halo 3. Pretty crazy that it's still functional, but I decided I'd rather start with a fresh account, so I sign up for a new one under my new email. I keep getting a prompt that my Xbox account is different from my store account and I have the option to select my new account as the store account. No matter how many times I choose this option, the prompt continues to come up. Whatever, it's in Beta, it doesn't seem to be causing any issues yet.

I'm enjoying it. I mean, at 1-2 USD (for first month), what is there to lose? Between Metro, Gears of War 5, Creature in the Well, and Unavowed, I feel like it has already payed for itself.

Honestly, if subscriptions stay in the 10-15 dollar range, I don't mind having two or three of them concurrently. I play a lot of games every month and if I am buying games outright, I generally buy 3-4 games per month. Granted, the average price of a game I buy is about 25 dollars, but still.

The real benefit to these subscriptions is they put their own new games (Gears 5, for example) up right away, so it's an inexpensive opportunity to play some new games you want right away. Also, I probably would never play something like Gears a second time, so it makes even more sense to me.

haha, same. I literally just took their name recommendation for my account lol. Probably for some "Games for Windows" nonsense I never planned to use except to install games. When did Windows ME come out? I think that's when I made it :D

Unfortunately, Hotmail existed before Gmail so this email account goes back like two decades or something like that, so every now and then a lot of stuff will just creep up.

I got a 3 months trial when I bought my Ryzen CPU. Currently using it for Gears 5. To actually get it working was a hazzle. Download something to verify your hardware to get the code. But oh well..

I tried installing the XBox beta app, but its system check noted my comp doesn't have the "May 19th" update, which isn't available for my hardware configuration yet, so I can't install the app.

WTF microsoft.

Granted I've only downloaded one game so far (Metro Exodus), my experience is pretty positive. However, if you like to run your games from a second HDD like I do, then you will need to go to the settings in Windows and change the default install location prior to downloading. But yeah, with Gamepass and origin Access I have a access to a decent library of games whilst not costing a fortune.

Well can’t really fault the value of it, but darn true client is really crappy right now.

I've had it for two months now, and have played (and enjoyed):

  • State of Decay 2
  • Gears of War 5
  • Unavowed
  • The Outer Worlds
  • Metro Exodus
  • Hollonight

All for a total costs of 16 dollars.

Money well spent. If this is how subscription services are going to work moving forward, count me in. Provided they average 10-15 dollars/month, I can afford to have three or four concurrent ones given the amount of games I play.

There is also, in my opinion, the added value of being able to try games I normally would not normally spend money on because they are included. For example, I probably would not have bought Unavowed or Hollownight.

Likewise, with Uplay+ (Ubisoft's subscription service), I have had access to and enjoyed:

  • Silent Hunter 3, 4 and 5
  • The Settlers series
  • Ghost Recon: Breakpoint (this is actually an ironically good reason for subs, because I'd have been pissed if I spent 60+ dollars on this game, but I only spent 10, so I actually enjoyed it).

Origin Access (EA's sub) is getting a bit stale. It was good at first but they don't update it enough and I already own most of the games I want on there. I will keep it until the new Star Wars game comes out then probably cancel after I play it.

Well, something went kablooey with the XBox app, and now none of the games will launch. I have no idea why, as I changed nothing on my system (hardware or software). Trying to reinstall Outer Worlds, so guessing I lost my saves--I had already played dozens of hours. Sigh. Think it's time to go back to Steam.

Everything is normal on my end, but that is messed up. If you have cloud saves enabled, your save files are safe.

Wasn't sure I enabled them, but apparently I did. Phew. Not sure what happened, but now everything is working again. Who knows? It's MS.

@attirex: That shit shouldn't be happening, but glad that you got your saves. :)
