I have a 300w psu with 20a on the +12v rail, can it run a 8600 gts xxx? (No I cannot get a 3850 as it wont fit in my case, nor do I have the money to buy a new psu)

I wouldn't suggest getting it if you only have a 300W power supply. The 8600GT I picked up says a Minimum of 350 Watts. I'm sure the 8600GTS uses 10-15% more power then a 8600GT. However it depends on your system specs: cpu, harddrive(s),optical drive(s), etc.

Nevermind its 300Watts for a 8600GT.

Minimum System Requirements

  • Intel® or AMD® compatible motherboard
  • At least 512MB system RAM
  • PCI Express® compliant motherboard
  • A minimum 300W system power supply
  • 50MB of available hard disk space
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  • Microsoft® Windows® 2000, XP or Vista
  • VGA or DVI-I compatible monitor

Get a 8600GT unless you're positively sure you don't have many things eating up watts like a Pentium D or multiple hardrives.

LOL, freak is right. minimum is not good. Minimum is if you really don't care or your a cheap ass manufacturer or someone at the store who is custom building it for you and he/she is choosing the parts. Your system might not be stable, try getting a 400W PSU.

A 300W will power a rig with a 7600GT, 8600GT, or HD2600XT without a sweat.

I'd personally get this high clocked XFX 8600GT if you don't want to replace the PSU.

Until the day it blows up and starts a fire.

Really, would you put racing tires on a car with a 4 cylinder engine? Because that's what this sounds like.

i hate when all people do is look at the numbers.. a 400Watt could power a GTX is depends solely on the PSU..you get many PSU's which say 500 but at load really only offer around 350 as their highly inefficent. and it also depends on what other hardware you have e.g. 8gbs of ram, two 30 inch montiors an ultra in SLI, 5x500GB 10k is not even going run on a 700 watt PSU.

Well, there are plenty of people who have paired the typical pre-built's 250-300W with those cards and have been okay.

My nephew has an HP with a 300W with a 7600GT and it's been fine for about 2 years.

Those three cards consume very little power, only up to 40-45Ws under FULL load which isn't reached very often.

Hell, I've got a 6200 in a P4 rig /w a 160W power supply and it runs fine.. even while gaming.

it is not all about the number, a crappy 600 may only offer 400 at load..
