I'm going to be highly disappointed if this thing has 1536 stream processors.

Well, I have to agree here. Xept when what they say about their stream processors being some kind of enhanced high speed chips is true. Time will tell. Or more specifically, only benchmarks will tell..

Yeah, as more info leaks out the less impressed I am with the 69xx series. Again, I'll hold my final judgments until the reviews start rolling out.

WOrd on the street is the 6970 is at gtx 570 speed or slightly slower in 3d mark. I hope amd get some good drivers cause it don't look like the gtx 580 is going to lose.

The more I see of these cards, the happier I am I went with SLI 570s. Which sucks, because last month I was really excited to see them.

That's what I've gathered as well. I'm even more intrigued as to how the 6950 will perform, and, yet, even more interesting than 69xx series performance is pricing. If the 6970 performs on par or less than the GTX 570 then the price must meet or be lower than $350. That would place the 6950 somewhere between $250 and $300, However the 6870 is around $250 or $260 at the moment. If AMD doesn't low-ball their prices they're going to be screwed. If anyone was planning to get a GPU any time soon it would be best to hold off. I have a feeling prices are going to get shaken up to the gamer's advantage really soon. That, or AMD will overprice their cards such that nVidia is the logical route for price/performance.

With a bit of luck, AMD are leading us on and will attack from the flanks when we all have bought an NVidia card

Yeah, same here. I was honesty expecting AMD to take the performance crown this gen considering how big of a margin they had with their GPU die size compared to Nvidia last gen. Nvidia just keeps pulling the longest straw though. Either way, it should be interesting to see how pricing turns out if the 6970 is in fact on par with the GTX 570.

I agree. The price/performance gaps are seemingly too close for 1 particular solution to be viable (as far as AMD cards are concerned). They're going to have to price adjust. Again, this all assumes that 5970 performance is on par with 570. We'll just have to wait and see. :D

I'm baffled as to how AMD would go from 1600 SPs to 1536 for their top-of-the-line single GPU card, regardless of whether or not their new SP design is much more efficient. Why would they need or choose to reduce the number of SPs? Why not crank it up a bit and deliver a massive blow to Nvidia by taking the performance crown? If the 6970 truly does have 1536 SPs, and uses more power than a 5870, this will be very disappointing indeed. Pricing is another issue. If the 6970 is barely on par with a GTX 570, how can they fit both the 6970 and 6950 in between $350 and the $250 6870?

I guess I'll have to wait for real answers.

im thinking that there is something fishy going on with regards to the current info we have, has to be why would you downgrade your high end gpu to 1536 sp's?!? the high end 6970 has to be near the 580 this time because the dual 6990 just isnt going to cut it this round as nvidia are coming out with their own dual solution as well

It's what I said before. I too feel that something ain't right. Makes no sense to downgrade. Except when you're confident that even downgraded, you'll kick the competition where it hurts. The (very early) results seem to indicate that there's indeed some kicking, alas thin air. So, I smell a rat...

Maybe the new Stream Processors aren't as efficient as they were intended to be and produce too much heat, which may be why they reduced them to 1536 from 1600.

I would wait for the 6990 to show up. If it has two of these bad boys on it AMD will have the fastest card on the block.

But it's maximum performance won't be guaranteed since its general performance will depend on how well a particular game is optimized for multiple-GPUs.

Shader performance wasn't a bottleneck with their past generations. Rather than produce a chip that has a lot of unnecessaryshader power, they decided to improve the areas where they are lacking.

I think you guys will be surprised where their cards will end up when the reviews start showing up.

You can't compare the new shader architecture 1 to 1, it's completely different. It has less shaders, except each shader is faster than last generations shaders. Hence you get the same or more power with less. Just look at the HD 6870, doesn't have anywhere near 1600 shaders and yet it performs within 7% of the HD 5870. If we do some simple ratios, if we say that the HD 6870's 1120 shaders are equivalent to the HD 5870's 1600 shaders, then with some simple math: 1120/1600 = 1536/X Solve for X, you get approx. 2194. So if this card was using the old shader architecture, it would need around 2000 shaders. This isn't entirely accurate but it emphasized the point I'm trying to make, UPGRADED SHADERS, DO MORE WITH LESS! Just because the number is lower doesn't mean this thing isn't a step up from the HD 5870, it most certainly is.

Would be Fermi all over again, but this time for AMD. Especially if the card can't even compete with the 580.

jeez if these bench's are right it seems amd has dropped the ball the 6970 is only competing with the 570 and their 6990 isnt going to save them this time as nvidia are coming out with the 595, if these are true and amd price them near 580 levels they have lost this round

Word on the street is the 6970 gonna cost 275 euro and the 6950 is going for 225 if these price are right I am going to grab a pair for xmas.
