XP 32, ASUS P5K-E, Q6600 @ 2.40, GTX 285, 1680/1050,

So i'd like to get a better minimum FPS in games. I rarely drop below 60FPS, but sometimes i drop to 50 when theres a lot of smoke/fire etc.

Im sticking to XP 32 for now, ill upgrade to Windows 7 64bit eventually.

Is it worth upgrading from 2 x 1gb @ 800mhz to 2 x 2gb @ 1066 on win xp 32 ?? I know xp32 will not recognize all the 4gb, but would i get a better min fps in games ?

Thx

Idk, if i am to change the RAM, ill just get a whole newcomplete set, its kinda cheap anyway, so even if the difference isnt big between 800 and 1066, ill go with 1066.

Im more wondering if its worth going from 2gb to 4gb in order to get a better minimum fps in games.

Hi I don't think you will see any difference. 2 gigs of ram on XP is plenty.

2gb ram is plenty for games and you wont see any difference in 99% of games.

as far as the faster ram..no. But as for more, yes it can make a difference. Any program any xp has a max memory footprint of 2GB, regardless of the total amount. So if you had 4 GB ram, and you see ~3.2, your game will still only use a max of 2GB of that. The thing is, you still have to run basic system services. So if you 2GB of ram, part of that is running the OS, which means you'll only have a large portion of that 2GB availiable for games but not the whole amount. how much depends on what you have installed in regards to services( i-tunes, antivirus, etc)..and it all can take up a bit of ram. If you have 3GB for example, the os will load itself, and you will still have at least 2GB availiable for games, which gives you max memory potential...which is good. BUT, if you run 4GB (2X2GB) you can run in dual channel mode (assuming you have the board for it), which will give you increased memory speed. True, you won't see the whole 4GB in xp, but your hardware DOES recognize all four, which means you can run at optimal speeds. Memory is dirt cheap right now. If you can get 4GB I say go for it, regardless of whether you'll see huge gains or not. Memory is too cheap to split hairs over this. People tend to forget that XP is merely a software package. Worry more about hardware, and software performance will follow suit.
