in my opinion you shouldn't I know someone that went from Windows XP to Vista and he made a big mistake, Vista just has to many bugs, wait for about a year untill they come out with Service Pack 1 & 2.

Don't listen to "psycho_chan13," get Vista 32bit since you have that 8800GTX which supports DX10 (XP doesnt allow you to play your games in DX10 mode). Don't get stuck with XP and no DX10 support. Vista runs 95% good (other 5% is minor bugs etc.)..only reason some people have problems with Vista is because they install apps that aren't compatible. They think everything that works on XP will work on Vista..that's just not the case. So get Vista 32bit so you can have better compatibility as 64bit support isn't that great right now.

I'm just a tad confused since your specs say you are dual booting XP 32 and Vista 64 (good call w/4GB RAM). You'd probably know better than anyone if you need to keep XP 32. How has Vista been working out for you?

I wouldn't worry about anything coming out in the future, you should be fine with Vista. But do you have anything now, that is essential, and runs only on XP? Or any old software you are thinking about getting? If so, might want to keep XP for now.

My desktop is only running Vista 64-bit (gaming is what I do most), I've never felt a need to return to XP :)

I disagree. Go with Ultimate and get the 64 bits you need. 64 bit ensures that half a year from now you will be able to extort every bit of power from your computer to play high end games. Also, most people who have the 32 bit version cannot upgrade their RAM above 2.5 gb. Oh they can put in 4 sticks alright - but only 2 of them will be noticed by the 32 bit Vista.

I would agree; hold your position with XP32. You will maximize your compatibility with games. Vista works ok with games, sufficiently so that if someone told me they were in the market for a new PC or laptop, I would definitely not tell them to steer clear of Vista, but that is a matter of making a new an investment in a new PC and not seeing the value of buying it with an older OS.

However, in your case you already have the hardware. You are talking about spending the scratch on a new OS which will give you lesser compatibility with games. There are not that many DirectX10 games on the market, and despite the fact that titles have started to show up, there has not been a universal shift to companies including DirectX10 content in new releases.

Dx10 images look better, but in my opinion only marginally so over Dx9 content. In most cases, I have to actually look for the details that are increased in games running in Dx10 mode.

If you hold off until next year, you lose very little, and you gain: a cheaper price on the license, increased game compatibility, and likely increased driver performance. If you upgrade now, you gain none of these things, but still spend the cash, and the increased functionality is only marginal.

I got vista 32 bit and 4 gigs of ram but only 3582 mb works, bit of a bummer but im not too upset got them on sale.

but you said you have 64bit vista as well as xp? well in that case for gaming use Vista for the Dx10 IF it works that is. but in all honest you cant really tell the difference unless you go though it though a fine microscope, but the little little +'s in graphics, inDx10 gives an over all better experience

Oh I see, that's a bummer :? Vista and dedicated sound cards don't play nice, alot of people have problems.

I'd probably stick with XP for a just little while longer. There's still nothing out yet that's an absolute "must have" for DX10 IMO. Crysis might be the closest (if you're interested in the game), but you can wait see what the verdict is for Crysis DX10 vs. DX9, and then decide (and hopefully have better luck dealing with the soundcard or figure out an alternative).

Vista is fine; it is the drivers out for Vista that suck. They have gotten significantly better in the past 3 months. The first issue I have had with Vista is TF2 crashes. However, I am reading a lot that states thatit is a source code issue, not an OS issue. Especially since HL2 and all modsrun like a charm. I have far fewer issues with Vista than I did with XP or 2000 when they were new. The installer is heaps better for Vista.

If you are interested in Vista go with the 32bit version but since you have 4GB you will need Vista 64bit.

Why do you have 4GB in an XP 32bit system? lol
