I may well be getting a PC soon but I'm not sure about the OS. It's not much of a price difference no matter which I pick, but if Vista can't run older games like the Longest Journey I'm not sure if I want it.

Do a Dual boot.

That way if Vista doesnt get along with some applications you have you can just use XP for it.

Its the only way to go....however, Pretty much everything works with vista...there is a Run in compatability mode thing that seems to work for me. I have instaled things as old a duke 3D on vista...but I use Xp in dual boot for some other apps that wont work.

new PC = new OS . Just get Vista. It plays old games just fine (sometimes games that don't even run under XP). You'll have to upgrade the OS sooner or later. Might as well do the step now.

If you are buying a new PC it willnot be wise to select Windows XP.Windows XP is already 6 years old and you probably already have a copy. I have not looked at Xp since upgrading to Vista.

if it was me I would get XP. But thats cause I have not had a fun time with Vista. Infact I just bought XP 64bit as my 2nd OS. I will only do Vista once Im blown away by some games. So far....nothing blows me away, considering Crysis looks insane on Dx9 at Very High
.

But if I was to be building a new PC and never had experience with Vista, I probably would get that, cause its the newest. Actually if I had the money I Would get 2 HDDs and XP and Vista.

XP is 6 years old yes. But other then DX10, what does Vista do that XP does not? In my opinion Vista is just fancy gfx and bloatware.

I can understand going with Vista as a new purchase, cause at some point, MS will force people onto Vista by cutting updates etc to XP. Games will become Vista only at some point, so buying Vista now as a new purchase would be more viable. For me, as an XP user, I won't get Vista until I absolutely have to.

I think a lot of people with no experience are fooled by the fancy look of Vista, and the sales blarb. It is made out to be great, and although there are people who have no troubles with Vista, there are plenty who do have problems with it.

I think I too would use 2 HD's, one for XP, one for Vista, if I absolutely had to get Vista for some reason of another.
