I am planning on building a new rig, cause i am really hyped for Assasins Creed, Crysis, Starcraft II, etc.
I am wondering, are these games gonna be exclusive to VISTA?
Can my 8800 GTS(dx10) work with XP?
Is the slowing of Vista that bad?
Can the 8800 GTS work these games?

So should i get Vista for the long run? Or XP?
I dont plan on getting XP if i am gonna upgrade to vista anytime soon!

The 8800GTS will work with XP. But, I would get Vista for the DX10 and for the long-run. This card will run these games fine.

Perhaps the beta, but not the real thing. Use at your own risk.

Unless there is a DirectX 10 (e.g. Vista-only) game that you want to play, there is really no reason to get it now.

Only game that comes to mind that requires Vista is Halo 2, and you can just as easily play that on an Xbox 360 to get the same effect.

An 8800GTS will work fine with Windows XP - it's just that DirectX 10 is not available for Windows XP, so it will be working with DirectX 9c. But it's still probably one of the fastest DirectX 9 cards that you can buy.

The performance loss in Vista right now is simply too much to deal with. And the issues with the rest of the OS is enough to tell me it isn't worth a purchase.

I would get Windows XP now if there aren't any Vista-only games that you feel you have to have.

I would dual boot, so that if programs do work well on Vista, then use it on XP.

I have a laptop with Vista now (even though I swore I wouldn't use Vista till a SP came out :P ohh well) and my normal desktop which is running XP (purely for gaming) and Vista is not entirely bad - but hopefully the SP will fix a lot of bugs and annoyance and add more features.

OpenGL 3.0 is supposed to be a massive rewrite of the API, including adding in the features and functionality that DirectX 10 adds over DirectX 9.

The only people that say Vista causes a performance loss are the ones that consider The Inquirer a reputable news source - and have probably never even SEEN Vista running before.

Check any of the latest benchmarks, Vista is no longer the "slow OS". The performance and compatibility drops in Vista have been overblown - it's like Y2K all over again.

I run Vista on another hard drive and I still consider it garbage and utterly a waste of money, I have a high-end machine too. Eye candy at the cost of performance.

Please, good sir tell me what VISTA can do that XP can't and don't use the DX10 argument because as it stands DX10 is pretty useless at the moment.

so are these games requiring direct x10? cause if i have a 8800 GTS on XP, someone said it works with 9.0c.
Will these games work on both operating systems/ direct x

also, i dont wanna buy XP if im just goin to switch to Vista soon.

Right now, if these games work with XP, and dont require VISTA (Shadowrun, Halo 2). I am considering XP cause its cheaper and apparently works faster, with less bugs etc.

That's your biggest problem, why not fork over money to Microsoft once instead of twice! XP only looks a little more attractive if you already own a copy, or can get an unused copy for free/cheap.

Also, while there aren't many games out at the moment requiring Vista, you still need it if you want run your games in DX10.

Definitely look for opinions about Vista from people that are using it now (you get alot of opinions from those that aren't).

For me, I've had no problems gaming on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit desktop, runs flawless! I have had some problems with games on my Vista Home Premium 32-bit laptop, however, that appears to possibly be a bios issue and is only relevant to Geforce Go video cards (won't be a problem for you).

Can my 8800 GTS(dx10) work with XP? Yea but in DX9 mode
Is the slowing of Vista that bad? Perfomance loss is typically between 5 and 10%.
Can the 8800 GTS work these games? Why wouldn't it?

So should i get Vista for the long run? Or XP? On a new rig, go Vista. Only a fool would stick with an old OS on a new PC. If you're unsure , use a dual boot system.Personally, Ionly boot in XP to play STALKER.
I dont plan on getting XP if i am gonna upgrade to vista anytime soon! It's inevitable. In a few years, Vista will be requiredformost newer games/applications.

Why would you want to upgrade to Vista so soon? The bells and whistles will bog your system down, not to mention that you can give XP most of those bells and whistles and run a whole lot faster.

DX10 isn't that great now. I've tried Call of Juarez and Lost Planet with 8800gtx and it's nothing XP can't do. Trust me on this, you won't be stepping foward at all by going with Vista. Plus all the Crysis videos released by Crytek have been running on DX9. DX9.c is capable of blowing you away with its razor sharp textures. Next year when DX10 cards progress, I'de say then perhaps Vista will begin to take advantage of gaming. My best guess is when games like Alan Wake hit the shelves utilizing those quad cores is when Vista 64-bit will then become necessary.

For those that have made the jump already, they evidently had their reasons, but I recommend both casual and hardcore fans to stick with XP for the time being. All IMO.

OK, so i can build a $1400 rig, here is the specs
THis is my first rig im building from the bottom up.

Asus nForce 680i SLI Mobo
Apevia X-alien case /w 500 watt power
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 ( Might get lower one for price. Saves 40$ for like .27 GHz)
2GB DDR2 800
EVGA Geforce 8800GTS 640MB
WD 150GB 10,000RPM
WD320GB 7,200RPM
Sony CD/DVD Burner

1313$ for all that, (not including 60$ mail in rebate, and 30$ shipping)just need a OS. XP is 90$. (Fitting my 1400$ rig)

I decided that Vista cant slow me down that much, and once good drivers come out and SP ( which i dont have to pay for right?) that it will improve.
The final question is... which VISTA?!?!?!
I am a gamer, not like running a business o anything.
Do i need vista ultimate?
Home Premium
etc.

And 64-bit or 32-bit.

Im not ordering this all now, (Probably nottill Nov.)so hopefully the price will drop, if u have any suggestions on changes i should make, plz say so. I really need cheaper changes.

Since Vista is being carried ENTIRELY by gamers it would be sweet if they created a "game boot" that got rid of useless services that have only a negative effect on gaming.

Like that will happen though...

If it weren't for gamers and DX10, Vista would have been a MAJOR flop compared to even Windows ME.

In my opinion, there really is no difference. Unless you have older hardware, then you would go with XP. If you are making a new gaming rig and have all of the latest and greatest stuffI would suggest getting vista.
